Did M. Night Shyamalan have the worst 3 movie run in history for a big name?

M. Night was riding high after Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs. I never saw Lady in the Water but has a “big name” director ever strung together a worse consecutive trio than The Happening, The Last Airbender, and After Earth? All three of these movies are below a 5 on IMBD and all three are below a 20% on rotten tomatoes. That’s quite an accomplishment of suck

Probably.

But he also had one of the best 3 movie runs.

Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs

Unbreakable just gets better. It's his most rewatchable movie. No surprise it got crapped on by critics. The performances are great especially Jackson.

I didn’t think after earth was awful. But They should have used someone other than Jaden Smith to play the son. The kid just isn’t a good actor

I liked After Earth

Last Airbender wasn’t horrible for me, probably Bc I had no expectations. I knew nothing about the series.

Are we pretending the prequels don't exist?

Signs gets worse though, and while still great, The Sixth Sense isn’t nearly as good once you know the twist.

But yeah, as far as some big name director who isn’t a hack like Emmerich or Bay, then yeah, that’s the worst for sure. The Happening was actually so bad it’s good, The Last Airbender was the single most insulting adaptation ever made, and After Earth was just stupid and bland. Shyamalan does have some talents, but I just wish he would stop writing in general and just be given scripts which match up to his strengths as a director, which sure as frick aren’t action movies.

I never hear that this dude is directing an upcoming movie and instantly get a frick yeah! feeling.

His movies are unique in their own right, but in like a watered down version of other much more intense and suspenseful flicks. It takes alot to make a twist really give that wtf feeling that lingered. I didn't get it with the six sense or the village, but for some reason I got it with the first Saw ending with that music score and the chaos of it all, as well as Se7en. I didn't see either of those shayamalan twists coming, but they didn't impact me the same way and I haven't felt the urge to rewatch either now that I knew the twists.

I agree Unbreakable is a fun watch though.

I really liked Signs. It’s an always watch on my list. It was a great mix of suspense, story and genuinely funny and touching moments. The acting was very good as well.

I love the “swing away” storyline and all of it coming together in the end. I like syfy though and could see pleople not liking it if aliens aren’t your thing. This and Sixth Sense were his peak IMO.

Many on here will think Signs does not belong on that list.

I agree with that sentiment.

Lady in the Water also doesn't belong, IMO.

He did have a stretch of bad movies though.

Revenge of the Sith is passable (no question it’s better than TLJ), and the dialog is so bad in The Last Airbender that it makes George Lucas look like Aaron Sorkin. Just imagine if every line in a movie is as bad as the “I don’t like sand, it’s rough, and course and irritating, and it gets everywhere.” Nothing but that garbage, including lines I would say are actually worse. As gravy, it has an even worse on screen romance than Anakin and Padme. Hard to believe, I know, but it’s true.

That was a project that should never have been green lit. There was just too much to take on for a movie. If they wanted to go live action, it should have been a mini-series at best if not just a live action series.

Unbreakable is a perfect example of a fantastic take on an original "superhero movie". I'm glad he went back to it with Split and I hope he can continue to do it justice.

I just never could make it through Sixth Sense after the first watch without turning it off or falling asleep. Not saying it is bad, just a slow paced movie that relied on the plot twist to be outstanding.

After Earth isn't as bad as jaden Smith is. Had his character been another actor that wasn't so damn bad the movie would have had a chance. yes, it was generic but that is what sells these days.

I really don’t care who does it, but anything less than a “Lord of the Rings” simultaneously shot 9 hour film trilogy just isn’t going cut it with this. The fact that the tv series takes place in less time than a year (ie 1 Harry Potter movie) is extremely important to the tone and pacing of the story because it’s implied that our protagonist will not have the time to master the 4 elements and will in all likelihood be killed by the Fire Lord when he is forced to face him within the year. Since we’re dealing with child actors, you can’t have them age anymore than they would organically age over the course of the story, meaning they have to be shot at the same time. And of course you need 3 hours per season, and probably 3.5 hours for the second season.

Yeah, he's a very talented director who's an immensely shitty writer. He would have had a much better career if he had others write the scripts for his movies and concentrated solely on directing.

It's funny about Sixth Sense, scared the crap out of me...especially that scene with the chick from the OC.

But it's sort of boring after rewatches.

Unbreakable never gets boring...I love the story arc of his son so desparetly wanting Willis to be special and having to convince him.

Best:

Sixth Sense
Unbreakable
Signs

Good:
(and I know I am in the minority but I would include The Village - mostly because of the story and acting of the two leads - it's not a horror movie, it's more Romeo and Juliett - Joaquin Phoenix and Bryce Dallas Howard.)

Split

The rest are basically crap.

They’re similarly insulting and both awful, but Airbender is all in all the better series. I feel like I could miss 10 episodes of DB and nothing has happened.

The Happening was SO BAD. It kind of made you wonder how it was even possible that it was so bad.
