No matter how many times I watch it, I always wonder.

No. Otherwise it completely ruins the movie.

We definitely needed this thread for the 1000th time.

Can we discuss a serious baseball film, just once?

I say no, because I want to still enjoy the movie.

If the answer is yes, it immediately becomes a bottom 10 movie of all time.

Well, there are obviously (at least) two camps.

I remain in the "not on purpose" camp because otherwise the entire story falls apart.

Dottie said it, "You wanted it more." That is the entire point of the film. At that point, Kit wanted that game, that victory more than Dottie who went back to play out of a sense of responsibility. Dottie was already back home with her husband making babies, at least in her mind. Kit had more to do in baseball.

IF you buy into the, "Dottie dropped the ball on purpose to let the little sister have it", then you ignore Dottie's performance during the game, her efforts to get Kit out, everything about the entire movie up until that point.

So, if you want to throw the entire film out for a cheap gag, go ahead and buy into the, "She dropped it on purpose" bullshite.

She was fine with it. Little sis wanted it more. You can't put yourself in a situation where a loved one beats you and you're okay, even happy about their victory?

FFS - it makes no sense if she dropped it on purpose. Literal nonsense. It also negates Kit's victory and relegates her to the role of a sucker.

A League of Their Own is KIT'S story of redemption and triumph, told through Dottie and Jimmy's eyes.

I would love to see how many people are that are in the "on purpose" camp are older siblings or only children.

They did this on the rewatchables a few weeks ago, Bill Simmons who will let you he is an only child of divorce, had such a strange take on Dottie and Kit's relationship.

Why cant she have change of heart at the moment it means the most to Kit? Yes Dottie played hard and wanted to win the game and be better than Kit for the entire movie. At the moment she could give her sister everything, Dottie chose to make the ultimate sacrifice for her sister.

This doesn't make Kit's victory meaningless or make her a sucker. They both won in that moment and I chose to believe Dottie chose to give them both the win.

Kit would know, you deep down always know when your older sibling lets you win but you never forget the first fight you actually win.

Foreshadowing is used in almost every movies.

Direct quote from Dottie talking to her grandson at the beginning of the movie.
Now remember, no matter what your brother does, he’s littler than you are, so give him a chance to shoot.

She was giving Kit her chance to shoot. Kit earned her shot by hitting the high fast ones that Dottie thought Kit couldn't hit. She hit it so Dottie dropped the ball.

Below is from this article:

In the piece, Candaele wrote about his mother, Helen Callaghan, who was one of the real-life AAGPBL players who inspired the Dottie Hinson character, enjoying the movie when she first saw it, but added:

quote:

But she added that she would never drop a ball on purpose — not for anyone — as Dottie does in the movie’s big-game climatic scene. It would have been a betrayal of her teammates.

That's something else that gets glossed over. Dottie wouldn't backstab her teammates to "give it" to little sister.

Competitors understand that, on any given day, a good player on the other team can beat you. Having one of your own lie down and "give it" to them is an unpardonable offense.

I don’t think she did. She always made her sister earn her way. No way Dottie lets her teammates down on purpose. Dottie had a very competitive nature, she’s not giving anything to anyone. She smiles in the end because her sister got what she wanted and she earned it. Dottie was competitive and wanted to win, but never wanted the glory. She shied away from the attention. Kitt wanted to get out of her sisters shadow and doing that meant the spotlight would be put on her. But Dottie made her earn it.

The yearly Dottie thread.

Whether God exists has been argued less on the Poli Board than this on the M/TV board.
