So we might have the first decent video game movie ever made (save for perhaps Scott Pilgrim and Wreck It Ralph). I’m a bit disappointed by the score so far, since I was hoping they’d go full out Roger Rabbit and be that of the generation. But they all say Ryan Reynolds killed it, and fans of the franchise seem to like it enough. Will update as more reviews come in.

I figured it would be really good or really bad. Not too many ways that could have a been a middle of the road movie

Neither of those are games patterned after real video games.

Scott Pilgrim is a comic.
Wreck It Ralph is an original IP.

Professional critics don't understand Pokemon. At all.

There are jokes, references, clues, etc, that probably require some knowledge of Pokemon in general. Hence why audiences will probably love this film and why pretentious critics missed out on a lot.

Example - In the first trailer, we see Tim and Pikachu interrogating Mr. Mime. Pikachu then launches himself at Mr. Mime and seemingly hits an invisible wall and slides down to the ground. If you know nothing about Pokemon, you're probably pretty clueless here.

But Pokemon fans know that Mr.Mime is the "barrier" Pokemon, and he's one of the few Pokemon that can learn Barrier, which is a status type move that raises the user's defense by two stages. The director chose to represent this by creating an invisible barrier which Pikachu runs in to as he tries to attack Mr.Mime. Fans get this and appreciate it. Most critics are scratching their heads thinking it's stupid.

Yeah but I’d didn’t know that and if the addresses him as Mr. Mime I would still get that joke

Regardless of a Pokémon's abilities, this is a simple mime joke. It's funny because we know a mime mimes being inside a box. It's a simple subversion of expectations. Critics tend to understand joke construction.

Guarantee it would be higher if they'd just stuck with the original 151 Pokemon.
I'm still gonna see it on release day though.

Doom and Resident Evil were pretty good.

Seems like this movie has been forgotten about already. They should have waited to release it in the middle of the summer. Endgame will crush it this weekend.

I like some of the later gens.

But do agree about the 151.

What do you mean by this? Half the appeal of WFRR was that characters from Disney, Warner Bros, MGM, and others were all combined into one universe. They wouldn't be crossing over characters from other game studios so I'm not sure what you are saying exactly.
