Elvis will drop bigly after opening weekend. Maverick is a box office freight train.

I haven't seen Elvis yet but my desire to watch it has nothing to do with Hanks. I love Baz's movies stylistically and have heard good things about Austin Butler, I'm actually a little disappointed to read the whole thing revolves around Hanks/The Colonel

Yeah if the movie featured Austin Butler exclusively, this would be a GOAT biopic but it doesn't.
The whole movie could be way shorter by just showing us one scene of Colonel being a fricking crook not 25 of them. If it was Austin Butler performing Elvis songs for 30 minutes of the total screen time it would have been fantastic but he probably only performs on stage as Elvis for a total of like 2 mins but we get endless scenes with The Colonel

I would go see Maverick a third time before Elvis on the big screen.

That's why Walk the Line worked so well.
Hell the Soundtrack was a bestseller and it was just Joaquin and Reese singing.
That's why people go to musical biopocs. For the music.

One of these is like a month into its release.

I liked both films. Maverick is the better overall film.
Elvis is a star making vehicle for Butler. His performance is worth the price of admission alone.
There is a TON of screen time with Elvis/Butler singing.
Only complaint: the run time felt long.

It also helped that unlike some biopocs where they are kinda boring, walk the line was interesting.
I don't care to see any Elvis movie because biographies have been done before on his life with no stone left unturned.

Uh Tom Hanks isn’t carrying Elvis
He just happens to be in the film. If anything, he’s the reason people might NOT see it with all his pedo business out in the open now

No one updated with the actuals
Paramount estimates for the weekend were $30.5 million for Maverick. Warner Bros was calling Elvis at the same
Per boxofficemojo.com, actuals were $31.2 million for Elvis. $29.6 million for Maverick. Those numbers don't actually change anything about how successful each film is, but they do contribute to narrative.
There was at least one thread wholly devoted to the hypothesis that Maverick would jump back to the #1 spot, which a bunch of dudes here really got behind. It didn't, though it's still holding remarkably well, and should be considered the post-pandemic theater success story.
Elvis was thought by many to be dead in the water. No name lead. Weird Hanks accent. Annoying runtime. It coming in first definitely helps sell it going forward. It was the "#1 movie in America" for at least a weekend, even if it initially looked like it might be in second place by only a hundred thousand dollars.
And to the dude saying Hanks is just one part of Elvis, the movie is structured around his character. He is absolutely both an integral part of the narrative (often annoyingly) and a major selling point for people to see the movie.

I actually heard they discovered some rare tapes of Parker speaking with that type of weird accent. He may not have used that accent in American interviews, but they say it was accurate to the recordings they found. That makes me not dislike it so much. Still prefer they not have used it, but I guess it adds to his bad guy character.
