100% on Rotten Tomatoes

Early, I know, but the trailer didn't look bad, in a campy sort of way.

The New ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Movie Actually Rules - Daily Beast

quote:

It’s not just the star power that fuels Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, but also the care with which each character appears to have been cast. Pine, whose signature swagger as Captain Kirk vaulted him into the Hollywood Chris Big Leagues, is undeniable here—reliably game, earnest when needed, and charismatic beyond all reason.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ Review: The Role-Playing Fantasy Game Becomes an Irresistible Mash-Up of Everything It Inspired

quote:

There’s an intricacy to the staging of “Honor Among Thieves” that helps balance out the roller-coaster derivativeness of the plot. We go with it, even as we know we’re gorging on a succulent overdose of fantasy dessert. The gladiatorial battle inside a maze at the climax is sensationally well done, from the panther with Venus-flytrap tentacles to the treasure boxes along the way to the giant cubes of Jell-O that help save the day. The monster at the end? To me that was one demon too many. But no matter. “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” should be a major hit, because it knows how to tap into our nostalgia — not just for a game, but for the entire fantasy culture it helped to spawn. It’s the movie itself that’s role-playing.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ Review: Chris Pine Anchors a Buoyant and Accessible Adaptation - Hollywood Reporter

quote:

In the spirit of the game, Goldstein and Daley revel in the specificities of their world. They round out the personalities of their characters, pack their screenplay (written with Michael Gilio) with zingy one-liners and cleverly timed asides, and calibrate the action sequences so they rarely feel auxiliary to the narrative. A sense of play pulses through the film, which, with its bracing special effects, detailed production design and propulsive music, seems determined to activate viewer imaginations.

Thought it would be stupid, but I saw a trailer for it recently and it looks funny.

Won’t see it in theaters but if my son wanted to see it I’d watch it with him.

Was expecting a lot from it and had high hopes.

Then, I saw the comments the writers recently made and I’ll wait until I can watch it for free.

Yeah, even if it's good, they kind of deserve it for being virtue signaling dickheads.

What did they say? I looked up "dnd movie writers" and all I got is comments about Ezra Miller and the Flash movie.

Could a movie from the writers/directors of Game Night be good? Yeah.

Is that a given? Of course not.

It could be. Vox Machina is great, and it's D&D (animated). It's a concept that has potential, if someone tries to make a good tale within the format.

D&D gets a bit of a bad rap due to the days of nerds sitting around rolling dice. The truth is, once things swapped over to playing on computers, it became a lot more accessible to the mainstream. At this point, it's mostly just a highly developed fantasy realm that is interactive.

This. Vox Machina comes directly from a group playing a D&D campaign (like the original Dragonlance books). In a good campaign, these characters get fleshed out by the DM and the people playing them while the story unfolds. Get a group of professional writers and character actors together and you have the opportunity to tell a good story with solid characters.

what if it's wokeness is overblown? i've seen that happen before.

Hogwarts Legacy is a good example. before it came out you would think the entire game was about trannys. then u play the game and out of 40 hours there is like 5 minutes of one trans character

also house of the dragon had a similar situation

The Dungeons & Dragons Movie Intentionally Emasculates Its Leading Men

The Dungeons & Dragons movie's writing team reveal they intentionally 'emasculated' the leading men in the film and put the women on the front lines.

from your own link
quote:

After reiterating that the reasons did not pertain to "woke" thinking, the pair explained that they wrote the men that way because they find it "funny and fresh," pointing to Rachel McAdams and Jason Bateman's character Date Night, which Daley and Goldstein also wrote. They also aimed to do something similar with Tom Holland's Peter Parker and Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark in Spider-Man: Homecoming. "We like our male heroes to be challenged and not simply heroic," Goldstein explained.

but I'm sure it would be too difficult for you to wait until you see the movie before you bitch about it being woke.

Whine at them.

If used for comic effect, that can be funny. Think about Chris Tucker in Rush Hour - he bumbled around and squealed like a scared cheerleader the whole movie and it was hilarious (and not at all woke).

Based on the comments from the writers, I don’t get the impression they did it for comic effect. I think they did it to continue the Hollywood trend of making male characters, particularly white ones, appear stupid and weak.

can you not see that you are just interpreting things as you want them to be rather than having an unbiased approach?

Nerds are in charge of making movies these days. If you are a D&D person, you are a nerd.
You'll love it.

Basically their reasoning was "We didn't murder the guy. We just shot him until he was dead. Not our fault that people think we killed him."

People like this corinthian kid are the ones telling you "You are a bigot if you don't let drag queens expose themselves to your kids."

Tucker was never emasculated in ANY Rush Hour film. WTF are you talking about?
