Just finished on TCM.

Great movie.

No one can say they are any kind of authority on films if they haven't watched Cool Hand Luke.

Fun Fact: The actor who played Sailor was the author of the novel.

The famous line, "What we have here is failure to communicate" was not in the novel and the author hated it. He claimed that a southern warden would never talk like that, and having spent time on a chain gang himself, we can assume he knew of which he wrote.

Prisoners are his apostles.

Man with no eyes is the devil

I don't get that one. How so? You mean at the very end in the church?

Okay, yeah, I guess so. Makes sense now that you mention it.

If you consider the context the Joy Harmon may be the most sensual scene in all of cinema. She had no idea she was playing the scene "sexy".

What a joke that a Great actor like Paul Newman never received an Oscar for the movies he was in until the end of his career. Just to name three movies besides Cool Hand Luke... The Hustler, Cat On a Hot Tin Roof and Long Hot Summer. The academy through him a bone for that shitty movie The Color of Money. IMO one of the greatest actors ever.

In the track 'Civil War' by Guns n Roses it opens up with this quote. Many years ago after finding out it was from Cool Hand Luke, I had to see it and really enjoyed it. Now I've seen it many times.

Quit feeding off me!

Luke is the "macculate" Christ, eating 50 eggs representing the sin of 50 prisoners.

("48. One in the bush. One in the box.")
quote:

Description-A sin-eater is a person who consumes a ritual meal in order to spiritually take on the sins of a deceased person. The food was believed to absorb the sins of a recently dead person, thus absolving the soul of the person. Sin-eaters, as a consequence, carried the sins of all people whose sins they had eaten. Wikipedia

Eggs in myth and folklore.

quote:

Dragline is Judas.

Dragline is a little bit Judah's and little bit St. Peter, loud, naturally alpha, initially hostile to Luke, later becoming a devoted convert and, at film's end, telling his fellow prisoners and new prisoners the "gospel" of Luke at the "cross" roads.
quote:

Warden is Pilate

I think that's true but, like Dragline, pulls double duty as The High Priest Caiaphas.

Taking him back to the prison telling the other LEOs, "He's ours!". He essentially decides it's better that one prisoner die for the overall good of the rest of the prisoners, the guards, and himself, their little nation.
quote:

And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
John 11:49-51

Great film all around.
