Contract $ after actor's run in a show is over

I always wonder if actors get money after they leave a show if their character get mentioned or a picture is used.
I guess there's a way to work that out in your contract. But if it were common, then no shows would ever mention any past characters.
So maybe shows can use the character's name, but not a picture of the character (which could be considered an on screen appearance by the actor).
I just would like some insight from someone in the know.

Probably not. The company owns the rights to the character, not the actor.

They don't get paid unless they actually appear on screen, pictures don't count. They do get reciprocal payments for rerun episodes they appeared in.

everything is negotiable but its highly unlikely. the production would be pretty dumb to cave into that. and even if they did, they would then just never show the character.

When you become a bigger part of the show, however, that changes. The next step up from an extra is a day player. If you get a line of dialogue in a show or have a scripted physical interaction with a character (called “special business”), you qualify for residuals. Everyone from day players to stunt performers to the main cast of a show, otherwise known as “featured players,” gets residuals. How much they get is based on what they are paid in the first place.
I know that isn't what you're asking but it looks like they will earn money off of that performance as long as it is in syndication.
