I used to watch these movies in the 80s. Just watched them again this week. Why was the first one a huge success and the second one not?
Conan the barbarian made 130 million and Conan the destroyer made 31 million. Conan the barbarian has made over 300 million over time

the qualities are vastly different. the first is a classic action movie directed by an all time great with a GOAT soundtrack

the 2nd one is a campy impression of the first...and PG13

I actually liked the 2nd one better. Was less realistic but more entertaining.

I liked the 2nd one better too. But, when I was a kid, I had the hots for the blonde (princess Jenna). Crazy that she was only 13-14 y.o. in that movie.

I liked the cast of the 2nd one better also

Conan the Barbarian, and I say this with no irony, is a masterpiece.

It's Shakespearean, it's a classical, orchestral, grandiose epic....its not a fantasy or gimmick of a movie like the second one. Just go back watch the opening 5 minutes of Conan the Barbarian to get hooked.

It's excellently written and has some if the best lines in any action or adventure or epic film ever. The casting is also unbelievable. James Earl Jones was beyond great.

Grace Jones along with Sandra Bernhard the ugliest actress ever!

Conan the Barbarian was a classic, and the characters played their roles seriously. His thief wingman, the asian looking dude, was a legit badass. As was Sandahl Bergman, in a warrior woman sort of way we haven't seen again until Lagertha in Vikings.

Conan the Destroyer was more of a joke. Grace Jones was just nasty, the thief was a wimp, and a lot of it was corny.

I'd honestly rather watch Red Sonja than Conan the Destroyer, if you gave me a choice of only one.

Milius I think was canned from the second Conan because he wanted to keep the same vibe as the first and make a trilogy of epics on how Conan came to rule and form his own kingdom.

But the studio, for whatever the frick reason, did not want another serious, philosophically deep film, they wanted a big 80s action spectacle and humor... Hence bringing in the comedic relief actor and giving Arnold more lines and making Conan's character much more lighthearted.

It was a mistake in retrospect.

The reason why one is more successful than the other is because one movie takes its source material seriously, and the other doesn’t.

Destroyer fails because the producers, directors, and actors think they are above the material. That’s how schlock is created.

Except it had virtually nothing to do with the character REH created a world around. I can’t express how disappointed I was when I saw it.

I would love a series where each episode (or maybe two at a time) was based off the Howard stories. No need to have a seasonal story arc, just let Conan be Conan.

Are they making "the legend of Conan"?

This, precisely. It reminds me of the way Batman has been handled over the years.

Although the "source material" was actually one of Howard's Kull stories.

Also, because the first one has kinky sex and boobies. It was more in the very early 80's style that produced Excalibur, another musical/cinematic masterpiece.
