re: Community v Parks & Rec
Cheers was casual comedy. Most often casual comedy has consistency.

Trying too hard comedy can go off the rails because they easily run out of edginess and ideas...because the show is predicated on being edgy. Community is a show that is destined for 2-3 years. Better Off Ted is another example.

Big time Network comedies get a black eye and rightfully so sometimes.

But to dismiss liking Parks & Rec because it's "safe" isn't fair when the other show misses the mark too much while trying to be Icarus. Community was a great show but it wasn't transcendent and maybe they should've focused on being more reliable.

I'll re-watch a lot of Community episodes. Parks and Rec, not nearly as many.

Parks. It's a goat for me.

Community is great as well.

Community starts off stronger than Parks, but Parks overall run was better and really hits its stride with Adam Scott and Rob Lowe. Harmon being fired and rehired didn't help with Community's continuity.

re: Community v Parks & Rec
I thought Parks and rec was my favorite comedy ever, and then I watched community.

Now community wins that argument for me.

re: Community v Parks & Rec
These are really two of my favorite shows.

I have To give Parks and Rec the nod because as some people have said it stays pretty good throughout

At its peak I think Community it one of the best shows ever. NBC almost cancels both (did cancel community)

Parks & Rec (post season 1) was much more consistent, but Community hits so much harder when it hits.

Parks and Recs

I enjoyed Community, I watched it earlier this year. But there were too many episodes that I had to skip because they were stupid like the GI Joe episode, the claymation Christmas episodes. I just could not do those in a binge watch. When Pierce and Troy left Community went down hill quickly.

P&R is okay, but pales in comparison to its peers IMO.

Doesn’t hold a candle to shows like The Office and Community. I stopped watching P&R in like season five or six. It was okay, but just not great so I fell out of watching it on NF.

Yeesh. I agree with most of your takes but this isn't one of them. I don't see how you can say P&R pales in comparison to the office when the style and humor is virtually identical for both.

P&R only had 2 real issues. season 1 was rocky as it didn't know what it wanted to be yet, but that got fixed shortly when brandanowitz left and chris/ben came on and it found its footing. Second is the addition of the loud gay man towards the end, who is one of the worst sitcom characters ever. Aside from that though, from season 2 all the way to the very end, the show was at a remarkably high level with no lulls. It truly is great episode to episode, seaosn to season, from 2 through the final. You can't say that about either community or office. There was never a point towards the end of P&R where you were just kinda hanging around and just counting the minutes to get through it like the office in paritcular. Some people don't want to admit it but later office was unwatchable. Cringeworthy storylines, awful characters, utter trash. The first half though was so elite it makes up for it.

P&R didn't have the highs the other shows had but didn't have nearly teh lows either. Peak community and peak office are as high a ranking as you can assign, 10/10, 100/100, whatever. They also fell off a cliff some as main characters left the show and got further into their runs. P&R never saw a dip. It's peak may not be a 10/10 but whatever you'd call it's peak, be that a 7 or 8 or whatever, it stayed there the entire time.

Someone can say commjnity is the better show and i won't argue, it's phenomenal. I just don't think dismissing P&R as some also ran is legit. It has every right to stand up there with the other great comedies of its day.

re: Community v Parks & Rec
Wife binged Community twice a few months ago and I didn't care for it. The writing was pretty good but the characters and the setting were all really tiresome. There wasn't a single character who I looked forward to seeing or hearing. It was the opposite of the "great episode for Randy" South Park meme - "This would be a great episode for, well, none of these characters but maybe some different ones."

Parks and Rec you wanted Ron and Donna and Gary and Andy and Harris in every episode. Even the unlikable characters (minus Mark) were likable and funny.

One of my biggest problems with P&R is that it felt like it tried to be almost an exact ripoff of The Office. So when I finally watched it, it felt like they were trying way too hard to be exactly that. So it rubbed me the wrong way from the beginning.

And yes, I know The Office is a remake, but I never watched the original. And the US version is one of my favorite shows of all time. So P&R was admittedly fighting an uphill battle with me. I suspect that I would've liked it more had I never seen The Office. And I didn't hate it...I liked it well enough. I just don't hold it on the same level as its peers.

I've never seen 30 Rock either, but I have a feeling I would have almost the exact same feelings for it as well.

Also, one other thing about P&R that made me not love it was some of the characters. I just didn't care for some of them at all, and thought they were terrible. To each his own though.

re: Community v Parks & Rec
While the office setting is similar between Parks & Rec, The Office, and 30 Rock, they are not even remotely similar in style of humor. The Office is all about awkward, make you cringe situations.

Parks & Rec is more like Modern Family with just funny people getting themselves into weird and humorous situations due to their jobs and personality traits. It’s just a town run by a bunch of funny people whom you want to spend time with. Season 1 is awful because it’s too similar to the office format. They start figuring it out in Season 2, and once Rob Lowe gets there, the show is excellent from there on out.

30 Rock is over the top wackiness. It’s set behind the scenes of a fictional version of Saturday Night Live. Everything is silly, lots of witty word play and sketches plus physical comedy. It’s almost like an Adult Swim kind of show, but less raunchy and with a better budget. Everything is off the wall and weird, but works due to having Tracy Morgan, Tina Fey, and Alec Baldwin playing the ultimate parody version of himself. It’s also very meta, constantly making fun of itself as well as tv & movie tropes in a similar vein as Community. Probably the most comparable show to it is actually Bojack Horseman, but 30 Rock tends to be much much less depressing.

This is accurate.

Parks after season 1 is just consistently funny and endearing.

Community hits REALLY high highs (like All-Time, best in TV history highs), but has some pretty big lows as well.

When they did the table read of that episode with Pedro Pascal sitting in for Walter Goggins a couple months ago, it was pure gold.
