The desserts are pretty boring most times. Seems like it's always ice cream, bread pudding, or a fried type of doughnut or dumpling. The time constraints just don't allow for a legit dessert in that format, especially given the weird basket ingredients.
A huge issue is that the chefs that compete and make it to the dessert round are 90+% of the time classically trained savory chefs who have nothing but the most minimal experience with desserts.
I guarantee they memorize a simple ice cream and bread pudding recipe as prep for the show and just adjust how they'll incorporate the basket into it. It's smart but incredibly boring.
I agree with the above poster about the Appetizer round being the most interesting - I think its legitimately the hardest single challenge in any competition show, cooking or otherwise. I don't care how much time they get from basket reveal to the timer, 20 minutes to cook and plate an appetizer from the hardest ingredients you'll see all show is insane.

There was an episode one season where every round was small plates, and they had to make at least 2 small plates. That one was interesting, but none of them really nailed both dishes in any round. One would get rave reviews, and the other was just kind of there. One guy tried to do 3 in one round and was eliminated. He didn't finish the third and the 2 he did complete were poorly executed.
The one that won had the least interesting dishes, but had the least frick ups. Pretty interesting episode. Forget the season but Martha Stweart was a guest judge.

Amanda is also a sneaky good chef. She won that March Madness bracket tournament Fiery put on in the spring.

I was just coming here to ask about this. We wanted to go the last time we were in NYC but ran out of time. And doesn't Geoffrey have a restaurant too?
Yes, but we didn't eat there. We decided on one Chopped judge and Alex was the "winner."

Yep. Whether it’s iron chef or GGG, when Alex competes, she almost always wins. She’s legit.
And I agree with others on Geoffrey. He’s the type I typically hate, but I can’t hate him. He makes it likable somehow
Alex is the best chef on the show. Savage, sassy AF and still likeable.
Geoffrey is exactly like y'all are saying. I think he get's a lot of his likeable personality from being on The Kitchen. He's always dressed to the nines but he actually jokes around quite a bit and is laid back. He's really only prentious about food IMO.

The part I hate is that there's only one fryer and ice cream machine.
Cutthroat Kitchen was awesome, can't believe they canceled it. Watching how chefs had to deal with the sabotage was hilarious. The best was when two chefs were somehow tied to each other moving around the kitchen.

We prefer GGG in our house, but still enjoy Chopped. Our favorite was always Cutthroat Kitchen until they canceled it.

Nope, that would be “How it’s Made”
You watch one episode about how they make ski boots. Then the next thing you know it’s 4 hours later and your watching how they make keyboards like it’s the most interesting thing you’ve ever watched.

In part, it's just manufactured drama, but it's all the more reason you should avoid both as a contestant or, better yet, make sure to get your food in first. On the "Beat the Judge" challenge, Alex had her shite in the ice cream machine in like 2 minutes ??
My least favorite things on Chopped:
- "My wife had cancer/my parents disowned me for being a chef"
- Fish in the entree round
- Squash blossoms in any round
- Making a taco with the protein and a side salad with arugala for pepperiness/radicchio for bitterness in the Appetizer round

Because of this thread I watched some episodes after not seeing it in awhile...and my remembrance was correct.
Most things are ice cream in the dessert phase which makes it really a terrible way to finish the show...or decide the winner.
I'm again with OP, great fun quick show to digest but I don't care at all for the dessert phase. It's the TV show version of the other thread...movies that are great but have terrible endings.

What’s wrong with fish?
It's just a really boring centerpiece of the entree, they 100% always just grill it or pan-fry it.
I like seeing shellfish, lobster and large roasts and stuff that they have a lot more flexibility with or are more likely to pose a trap like a double pork chop.
I'll just add that easily the worst ingredient I've ever seen on Chopped was a dessert round pig snout, honestly the most fricking disgusting thing I've ever seen in my life presented as food. I think both chefs just sliced it as thinly as possibly and tried to fry it until crispy.

I think I understand the reasoning behind it, but man does it make for bad tv when they let the contestants cut themselves, still finish the dish, and say it's too dangerous to eat.
Just stop or extend the clock for all contestants if there's a cut, edit around it as much as possible, and get the food judged. Episode I watched tonight had a guy cut himself in the dessert round - gee, really on the edge of my seat on that one.

It's also a trap. At least one of the remaining fricks it up because they lose track of time (almost always overcooked and sometimes with bones).
We are always amazed how many don't put enough salt.

You ever watch Chopped, on weed?
Love the “Half Baked” reference. Am I right?
That’s funny, because I just watched that movie for the first time two days ago. Otherwise that would have went right over my head.

History Channel and Food Network have some fantastic background 30 minute episodes.
Forged in Fire is another guilty please - 30 minute blacksmithing competition where the winner is determined by slamming their blade against various objects at the end.
