Rewatched Roadhouse for the first time in a while. So many things about this a-hole bothered me. First, I think the role was at least somewhat miscast, or maybe would not have been if it weren't for that last fight. No way Gazzara would last 5 seconds with the Dalton character. Also, why does he care so damn much about his nephew's shitty bar tending job if he's "in the employ of Brad Wesley"? Wesley could just pay him to be another of his non-sensical entourage. And if he did that, there's no reason to go to war with the Double Deuce. Finally, the crap he pulled on the town was not at all to his benefit. Destroy the very businesses you depend on for money? Found an article with a good quote on him:

quote:

Some of the best movie villains ever conceived, including many of the most outrageous James Bond baddies, have always had a motive. They didn't just choose to be bad; they were victims of circumstances which made them cold-hearted individuals, and this makes them more human, more believable. Brad Wesley has no motive. He's just a grinning, psychotic bastard who sponges off everybody in town and hires murderous thugs to wreak havoc and destroy private property for fun, smiling all the while. I bet there was a scene on the cutting room floor where he skins a kitten alive while drinking the blood of an orphan child.

Don't know if we was miscast but if Ben Gazzara goal was for me to hate him, by golly he did an excellent job. I absolutely hated Brad Wesley to the point when I saw BG in another movie, I decided not to watch it.

As a villain, I agree with that synopsis. His methods where thuggish and not financially devious.

Thanks!! I couldn't remember but remember laughing at it..The whole premise that a town big enough for a JC Penny but small enough for a guy like Brad Wesley was laughable.. But I do still enjoy the movie.

He doesn't care about the nephew - it's about making the people of the town bend to his will on anything, regardless of how arbitrary it is.

He was running a protection racket. If your "clients" start causing trouble by refusing to pay, you have to make an example of them so everyone else stays in line.

He's definitely psychotic - thinking of the scene where he runs Dalton off the road and keeps singing like nothing happened - but I don't think I would say he doesn't have a motive. His motive is the money he's receiving by extorting the townspeople for years.

Ever been to Bastrop back in the 80's?

It was a big effin deal when the Sears outlet opened up.

And there were definitely a villian or two that lived in that town back in the day.

As far as we know prior to the events in the movie, he was content letting everyone be as long as they continued to pay him and do what he told them to do. He didn't start destroying businesses until they started to stand up to him and refuse to pay the protection. He had to figure taking out one or two of the troublemakers would make the others fall back in line and he could go back to collecting his cut. The Mafia has been doing this forever.
