I think she just did not speak English very well when she first started. I remember her native language films getting a lot more critical praise.

My favorite movie that she is in is probably Vanilla Sky, and she is pretty awful in it. It’s either that or she is just overshadowed by how good Cameron Diaz is at being batshit crazy
ETA: That said, I think she is more respected in Spanish language films. Maybe she’s better in Spanish, or maybe most Spanish language actors suck. Bardem excluded

I suspect she's much better in her native tongue where she knows the cadences to hit and so on. In English speaking movies she's a decent, not great, actress who has a wonderful look and a sexy accent. You can have a very nice career with all that.
