Movie based on Lousiana Governor Earl Long. Anyone seen this? Not a bad movie. Shows alot of Louisiana and of course Blaze eating that watermelon.

The music for it is one of my husband's favorite sound tracks ever. For me, Paul Newman in boxers and (IIRC) cowboy boots remains memorable.
NOLA story, when they were making the movie, Newman was staying at Soniat House, and he walked his own dog. And the dog was trained only to squat in the street beside the sidewalk, never on the sidewalk

It's been many years since I've seen it. I laughed so hard at the scene where Blaze in on the porch giving an interview, and Earl is in the background trying to get a pushmower started. She said something along the lines of "he's not crazy" and then he blasts the mower with a shotgun.
I knew an elderly gentleman who worked at Southeast Hospital when Earl was committed. He said it was all kinds of crazy with the press and state police everywhere...along with the regular crazies.

My grandfather went out to Earl Long’s farm (the “pea patch”?) one time to buy some livestock or something. When they got there Earl was sitting on the front porch wearing nothing but a pair of boxer shorts. When they walked up and introduced themselves he told them he’d meet them around back he just needed to go inside and put something on.
Earl met them outside a few minutes later still wearing the boxers but he had also put on a pair of black rubber boots.

Paul Newman is my favorite actor of all time, but for some reason I could never get into this movie.
I’ve tried to watch it twice and both times I just never really enjoyed the way it plays. It has that sort of weird late 80s cheesiness to it in the direction, music, etc that just doesn’t feel right for a good biopic imo.
It’s been many years so I should probably give it another shot.

Almost my entire family was in this movie as extras. Filmed a lot of it in Winfield where the Longs are from which is where my family is from. Only reason I wasn’t in it as well is because I was too young. My mother was the stand in for the actress playing Blaze (no pics).

Yeah, I was going to post that a lot of it was filmed in Winnfield.

Had the fortune of becoming friends with one of the men involved in taking Earl to Mandeville. He was a prominent political operative at the time. Earl was bi polar, which was not well understood at the time. He was having a manic episode and wanted to kill himself. He locked himself with Troopers on the second floor of the Gov Mansion. They negotiated with the troopers and colonel of state police to let them in (his friends and family ). Troopers refused and Colonel refused to order them to open the door. It was mayhem.

Some of it was filmed at East Louisiana State Mental hospital in Jackson I believe. My grandparents retired from there and seems like I remember talk of Newman being in town for this.
