Just finished Striking Vipers (I’ll watch the rest tomorrow). I don’t think anything about that episode was SJW and making the two characters gay would be completely pointless because they aren’t homosexual.

I think this episode showed the different effects of growing old. Danny was clearly tired of the “suburb lifestyle” and getting old (Ex. Complaining about his knee pains, not working out, looking at his friends wife arse while letting the meat burn). Meanwhile, Karl is growing old in a different way. Sure he’s going out and sleeping with twenty somethings. But they have zero uncommon with one another (Makes a comment about the bartender looking like Dennis Rodman. His date is so young that she has to google him). They both seem to be searching for some sort of connection that it dulls their senses irl (In the beginning, Karl repeatedly tells Theo about the dishwashers knife sense. By the end, he’s making the same mistake. As well as daydreaming at the dinner table).

The episode has some comic relief in it. Karl’s “I fricked a polar bear and still couldn’t get over you” & “I tried it with a dude from Holland. But couldn’t get over the accent” made me laugh pretty hard.

Maybe it’s my paranoia. But I felt that the dishwasher was going to record him or that his wife would load up the game and find some recorded game footage.

Sidenote, the actress that played Roxette is kinda hot.

What was SJW about Striking Vipers?

Nothing at all

Questioning sexuality and having minority characters doesn’t mean it’s SJW.

I thought it was a really good episode and it raises interesting points:

- When does gaming become too immersive?

- What happens when people prefer a virtual reality over an actual reality?

- Does what you do in a game reflect who you actually are or is it just a game?

Yeah I thought overall it was a good episode.

A lot of people choose watching porn (in this case Striking Vipers) over having sex with their SOs... it had nothing to do with being gay, which I'm glad they snuffed that out later in the episode.

I feel like that quote could be inserted into a black mirror meme generator for years to come - amazing line.

I am very confused by what is SJW about that episode

Let’s be honest. If that kind of VR was reality, nobody would actually play those games. It would be a world wide, free for all frick fest.

If you'd told me at the end of S4 that the Miley Cyrus episode of S5 would be the one I enjoyed the most, as well as the most Black Mirror-y, I'd have never believed you.

Striking Vipers was icky.

Smithereens went on way too long, and I was left with the impression that they were using Topher Grace's character in a lame attempt to paint Zuckerbot and Jack Dorsey-types in a sympathetic light. frick those guys, in particular.

I think they blew the budget on Bandersnatch, and for that, I'm aggravated at Charlie Brooker.

This season was a giant dud, IMO. They're trying too hard, now.

I started a new BBC seires called "Years and Years" that dives down this rabbit hole.

The first two seasons of Black Mirror were three episodes each. Also, Black Mirror is one of a few series that has complete autonomy on Netflix. I really don't get the "I need 10+ episodes to feel satisfied" complaining from people.

I acknowledge the point that the first seasons were short, too, but 3 and 4 were longer, and the quality per episode seemed greater.

It would have been really lame if they ended up just suppressed homosexuals. We’ve seen that story a million times.

IMO I think the commentary about getting lost in VR is the overt one that many will pick up on. The unintended consequences of technology in our daily lives has been a running theme for all of Black Mirror

I think the more subtle commentary is on sexuality ect. I still dont know if I have solidified my thoughts on what it all means, which imo is the genius of an episode like this. I feel like there are a million interpretations depending on your POV and how aware you are of everything ect.

What surprised me was when they met after the dinner and smooched - they they had no chemistry. I thought for sure they were just going to submit to their feelings about each other. Then again when they started fighting. I think thats the interesting commentary about sexuality. They're not gay, irl anyway, but only have chemistry in VR? I think that's kind of a commentary on nonbinary sexuality. There arent really firm definitions. ect.

Then you get the end with some sort of arrangement where the guys get to bone once a month while the wife gets to go be a single girl ect.

I think the part about sexuality is going to go over a lot of people's heads. Especially the conservative types

I thought it was a cool episode that's pretty thought provoking imo.

The guy in charge of the show said the seasons are shorter so they can have a quicker turnaround between seasons. I’m ok with that.

It’s pretty classic black mirror in that sense and also does a lot of world building on why the BM society aloud technology to literally sep into their brains.

This will probably out me as a degernate. I’ve been on the internet too long and seen some dark corners of it. I think it is sort of a commentary on cyber sex, online Roleplay and other online person to person anon “sex” that people use as a form of escapism. A lot of people are now growing up, getting married and having kids that have lived a completely separate life online than in reality.

Anybody catch any Easter Eggs, other than the news crawl during the Miley episode when they were talking about her going into a coma? (Black Museum and another that's escaping me).

Apparently I missed a bunch.

This goes back to the old saying "That you can literally find any fetish on the internet if you search hard enough". VR Porn is already a real thing and I think we are only a few years away from multiplayer VR.
