Avatar on track to hit $2 billion by this weekend and projections show a total between $2.2 billion to $2.3 billion.

Whatever you may think of James Cameron, he's a fascinating story because you'd never think he'd be the only guy in film history to make 3 $2 billion+ films.

The guy was a truck driver who dropped out of community college, used to live in his truck and spent his time learning movies by going to the film departments of college campuses.

James Cameron may be arrogant but the guy continually delivers.

How? A bunch of posters here said it would be a massive flop.

Still don't get the weird Avatar hate. I loved it.

I say this as one of the resident Hollywood haters on the M/TV board

I've seen a few people (not on here but in another community) argue that Disney is faking the numbers.

And it's slightly funny because the numbers are handled by a 3rd party organization so not Disney themselves.

Remarkable. Almost like many of us predicted this exact outcome while skyscreamers were saying it’d flop.

Cheekiness aside, the legs of these Avatar films are insane. I did think tWoW added to and expanded upon this world, and I really liked it more than I expected to. Much better than the original imo. The visuals are obviously world class, but the family element made it much more personal. I was skeptical before, but now curious to see more sequels.

Who are these people? I didn't see anyone saying that. I just thought the first one was bland crap but these aren't movies. They're like park rides and whole families go to see them multiple times. That adds up to a lot considering the tickets are way more expensive because of the novelty of 3D.

Off the top of my head there was the CatholicLSU guy who claimed the film would finally expose Cameron as a has-been and put his career into the grave

link or gtfo?

People said it was going to suck, but that it was going to be gorgeous and make boatloads of cash.

Just like the first one.

I still can't believe that movie is getting sequels. No one saw it for the story, and almost certainly no one cares about continuing the story over a decade later.

Do I think the sequel to a movie that ripped off a classic tale to use as a vehicle for agenda pushing back then will be successful in 2022? Nope. I’m sure it’ll be pretty though.

No one cares about Avatar. This is going to flop so hard. How much money does this thing need to make to break even?

The one in bold is clearly someone who said it's going to flop so hard.

I don't know a single person excited for or even talking about this movie.

TD thread

There appears to be zero buzz about this movie. Hell, the first one was only a hit due to the uniqueness of the 3D elements at the time (the movie itself has no rewatchability to me). I don't know anyone who is interested in another version of this that takes place in the water.

And on top of this, Cameron has said the sequel will be to be the 3rd or 4th highest grossing movie of all time just to break even! This is going to be a box office disaster.

T2 is my favorite movie he did followed by Aliens.
Then the Abyss.
