And it looks like its actually going to happen. They've picked a showrunner that is a big fan of the series and are partnering with Sony on it. Its happening.

quote:

Amazon Prime Video will launch the one-hour series in over 200 countries and territories with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Chuck writer Rafe Judkins, who first found fame as a contestant on Survivor, adapting. It will be produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios.

The Wheel of Time had been in the works at Amazon for about a year, with new Head of Amazon Studios Jennifer Salke telling Deadline in June that she was set to read the script over the summer and the project was “very much alive”.

The Wheel of Time, which has sold over 90M books around the world, is set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it. The story follows Moiraine, a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the ‘Aes Sedai’ as she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women. Moiraine believes one of them might be the reincarnation of an incredibly powerful individual, whom prophecies say will either save humanity or destroy it. The series draws on numerous elements of European and Asian culture and philosophy, most notably the cyclical nature of time found in Buddhism and Hinduism.

Judkins serves as showrunner and executive producer, alongside Rick Selvage and Larry Mondragon of Red Eagle Entertainment, Ted Field and Mike Weber of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle producer Radar Pictures and Shrek Forever After producer Darren Lemke. Robert Jordan’s widow Harriet McDougal is a consulting producer.

Just finished reading this series last year. Hopefully this happens (and it's good)

So I’m guessing the Golden Compass will be announced next week by Showtime.

If they cut out every time a woman sniffs, tuggs her skirt or strokes her braid, that will cut out a year of two so they kids will be 95.

Just being real, this series will be an insane challenge to pull off.

There are so many extraneous bullshite side plots that go on forever they will need to excise, a ridiculous amount of characters...etc.

They will need to condense 14 books down to 6-8 seasons.

"Channeling" will be a challenge to reproduce on screen but I'm sure they can figure that out.

Last, it is simply a bit too wholesome for the Game of Thrones generation. They will need to amp up the Violence/Language/Sex a bit (although obvious not to GoT levels, hopefully).

There was plenty of sex and violence in the books. It just wasn't detailed. Matt's exploits alone could fill a few seasons of Cinemax After Dark.

Once Rand figured out what he was doing, he was a killing machine.

The bullshite of constantly bringing dead folks back to life needs to be chopped.

There are a pile of subplots that can be cut. The editors / writers have a ton of work to do.

Rafe, the guy in charge of the show, has been posting on twitter a bunch about his outline and scripts and plans.

He admitted the series will need to be greatly condensed, but said that would "come in the middle books", so basically condensing books 5-11 down pretty drastically, I imagine.

Some of this may be slight SPOILER territory:

Also said there are characters he feels need to be expanded. Gave Logain as an example.

Also a certain characters relationship with 3 women he feels needs to be expanded upon, made into more of a polyamory situation instead of polygamy. Among many other things.

I was encouraged.

HUGE fan of the series.

It won't translate well to the TV screen.

"Rand didn't know whether Lan or Rhuarc was more dangerous, but he was sure a mouse could starve on the difference." That kinda writing is what did it for me. But it will all be cut out for TV.

Drink everytime someone says "light!", "mother's milk in a cup", anytime Perrin blushes or whenever Mat tosses the dice.

Me too. It was the first fantasy series I ever read and I've been reading it since the mid 90s.

I think it CAN translate very well to screen, it just needs to be condensed a great deal, modernized, and sharpened. There are so many plot points that can be erased and so many that can be enhanced.

A lot of things the guy in charge of the series really, really encouraged me. He very much understands the series and is also pretty practical.

On the other hand, he had some SJW comments about the series that gave me pause. Comments about needing to make sure the cast was as ethnically diverse as possible, raising the profile of LGBTQ characters...

And worst Egwene is basically his favorite character and he sees her as Rand's equal in terms of a character in every way. That was a bit concerning.

Yeah I didn't mean to do that. You have to take the good with the bad.

He said a lot of things that were very encouraging, and was really up front about the problems with the books and the need for condensing. He had a lot of good ideas.

But his talk about being a feminist and what not was concerning.

I hope the feminism doesn’t come through too strongly. The source material already has great female characters. Besides, feminism as understood today doesn’t make sense given the metaphysics of the universe. Men and women are inherently different through their connections to saidin and saidar.

[where magic exists, but only women can use it.]

Incorrect summary. The Asha’man were the male half of the source and were able to wield its magical power.

But nonetheless, Jordan’s world was one of if not the most epic fantasy stories ever crafted. I hope they can do it justice.

First of all that’s not accurate. The rundown is a very succinct breakdown for people that haven’t read it. And it’s accurate if you think about it.

Great series but it definitely lost it's way in those middle books. Just hundreds and hundreds of pages where nothing happened. But the high points were very, very high.

I'm a little skeptical that it will work on TV but I'll definitely be watching. See y'all in the in-game threads.

Doesn't this amount to one person buying one copy of each book?

I read most of the series. I do regret not finishing it, but I also don't feel like I can go back to it without re-reading. Will watch this if it happens.

Maybe I should read this series now. I’m a slow reader though I probably wouldn’t finish in time lol
