The trailer just dropped today and it looks pretty interesting LINK

quote:

Altered Carbon takes place 500 years in the future, where human consciousness can be uploaded into a “cortical stack,” allowing the rich to change bodies (“sleeves”) in order to live forever. There are, naturally, people opposed to this, and the series will delve into this as well as a central murder mystery that will explore this strange new world.

The series is based on the novel by Richard K. Morgan‘s 2002 novel, and is being adapted by writer-producer Laeta Kalogridis (Alita: Battle Angel) and director Miguel Sapochnik (of “Battle of the Bastards” fame from Game of Thrones).

The show will be available on February 2nd.

loved the first book. bought the second and third but haven't read them because I heard they aren't very good. ill knock them out at some point

looks like they captured the cyberpunk aesthetic pretty well. i hope it's very faithful to the book. the showrunner said it's her passion project

If you liked the first one, you'll like two and three.

I guess I need to pick these books up - I have a feeling this will be Netflix's "Game of Thrones."

Just has that vibe.

Great books. It'll be interesting seeing different actors playing the same characters in the same show. That's a pretty novel concept.

I agree. I love who they got to play Kovacs' sleeve. Fits with what I pictured when reading the book.

The first is the best, but the other two are excellent as well. The third is almost as good as the first.

official trailer

Looks like a Blade Runner/Ghost in the Shell ripoff but still cool. Great production values too. I'll check it out.

Caught the trailer by accident scrolling around on imdb. One of the quieter Netflix debuts. It is on the top of my anticipation list now.

It really shouldn't have much in common with those two in terms of themes (unless Netflix screwed up the story), though the setting will be similar in that it is a cyberpunk world.

Where Ghost and Blade Runner focus on what it means to be human with AI characters, Altered Carbon is a Cyberpunk detective/noir that focuses on the effects of humans being basically immortal due to the downloading of consciousness and how society would change due to that (and the ethical considerations).

The book is fantastic, can't wait to see how it translates to tv.

Netflix's latest original show throws so many far out sci-fi concepts at you in its first 30 minutes, let alone across the whole 10-episode season, that it's often hard to keep track of what's going on from one scene to the next. But for those who stick with it, Altered Carbon is an engrossing show with fascinating ideas that it sees through all the way to the end.

quote:

This universe is as dense as they come. Altered Carbon isn't hardcore sci-fi because it's set on a spaceship or there are weird-looking aliens running around; it's because the show recognizes that revolutionary new technologies don't exist in a bubble. They alter the fabric of the world, like cars, air travel, the internet, and cell phones have.

Altered Carbon never shies from examining exactly how an invention like the cortical stack would change our reality, and this future society appears far different from our own. Yet in many ways, it's really exactly the same--which is more or less the prime directive of great science fiction.

sounds awesome
