In case you forgot about this prime piece of pre-DCEU movie history, there was a time in the early ’00s (long before Zack Snyder took a stab at the story) when Warner Bros. was working on a Batman vs. Superman movie. Details about the project have become more widely known in recent years, with Den of Geek revisiting the canceled project which was meant to be directed by Wolfgang Petersen and star Colin Farrell as Bruce Wayne and Jude Law as Superman (can you believe?!). While the movie never actually happened, it’s become a curious case study in what direction the DCEU could have gone in.

After screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker (Se7en) wrote the initial draft but ultimately exited the project, Goldsman stepped in to take over the writing duties. Amidst conversation with Collider wherein he was reminiscing about his time spent in the Batman universe, Goldsman had this to say about his contributions to the Batman vs. Superman project

quote:

“I wrote on […] this version of Batman v Superman [around 2001or 2002]— when Colin Farrell was cast as Batman and Jude Law was cast as Superman and Wolfgang Petersen was directing —we were in prep and it was the darkest thing you’ve ever seen. It started with Alfred’s funeral and Bruce has fallen in love and renounced being Batman, the Joker kills his wife, and then you discover it was all a lie. Just that the love itself was constructed by the Joker to break [Bruce]. It was a time where you would be able to get these sort of stories together in script form but they couldn’t quite land in the world. Somehow, the expectations of the object — whether they be audience or corporate or directorial — it wasn’t landing quite in the way I think we imagined when we put them on the page.”

That sounds even worse than the Kevin Smith reboot where he was forced to write in a giant spider.

I'm beginning to think the people over at WB kinda sorta just don't like Superman at all and for the most part merely tolerate Batman.

They were trying to subvert expectations for no other reason than to subvert expectations before Rian Johnson.

WB is absolutely terrible at adapting existing/established works.

Just fricking terrible.

Say what you want about JK Rowling, but I'm convinced her creative control is the only reason they have a single successful franchise.

Warner is the studio that gets shite for the crappy movies that they don't make.

I'm not sure how that brings Clark and Bruce into conflict, but I am definitely intrigued.

That'a sort of what stuck out to me, that Superman isn't mentioned once in Batman v Superman and it's all Batman v Joker.

Her creative control on Fantastic Beasts is what has killed that franchise. And I guess we've forgotten Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy?

Not just that but DC films are doing well at the box office now. WW, Aquaman and Joker were major successes.

The state of Hollywood's desparation for money and lack of assertive creative control:

WB makes Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix with David Yates directing (4th director in 5 movies) and Michael Goldenberg writing (only movie not written by Steve Kloves). The book was released in 2003, the movie was filmed from Feb-Nov 2006 roughly 7 months after the sequel novel was released and roughly 7 months before the final novel was released.

The timeline isn't exactly clear, but at some point, JK Rowling advises them to add Kreacher the house elf to the movie.

quote:

However, after Rowling prodded the filmmakers to include him, saying, "You know, I wouldn't [cut him] if I were you. Or you can, but if you get to make a seventh film, you'll be tied in knots", he was added back into the script

Most of the final novel is written. She could easily tell them why he's important, but she doesn't. WB hastily adds in a brief CGI scene of him walking around a house, an entirely useless, expensive scene that the filmmakers struggled to shoehorn in

quote:

“We took Kreacher out, and Jo said, ‘Listen guys, you don’t have to put Kreacher back, but I’m just telling you, if you want to kind of keep a thread going for six and seven, you might want Kreacher to come back.’ She basically told us Kreacher plays a role in Seven, in a sense. She hinted. We thought about it for five seconds, and he came back.”

quote:

“It was kind of tricky to raise that in our story, because it’s for so much later,” Yates said. “We figured we can probably introduce it later, and that’s the approach we took.”

Then the final book comes out a month after the movie is released or whatever and this character they just had to add back in basically served no purpose. Could have been cut and changed a million different ways.

They literally admit they are held by the nose by the author, completely hamstrung creatively, all to capitalize on future revenues by literally a couple of months.

No continuity at director, no continuity at writer, no set creative vision for the franchise or any individual movie (except POA) - just make the shite as fast as possible and give JK what she wants.

You're right. This board never does that with Disney. Not once ever.

In fifty years, Tim Burton's Nick Cage Superman will still be a discussion in film classes. Thor 2 will be a forgotten memory.
