Age of Samurai on NetflixPosted by Saint Alfonzo

Anyone watching this? Started watching last night. Since I was a teenager, I've always been fascinated by Samurai. I may have to break out Nobunaga's Ambition later.

Nice, I love a good history doc. I will check this out.

On episode 2. I’m digging it but this is my wheelhouse.

It’s not bad. I enjoyed The Ottoman’s and Roman ones better.
Not sure why, but I feel like they took a bunch of liberties with the story on this one. Maybe it’s bc I’m skeptical how detailed they are getting about trivial items. How do they know this guy defended off 5 guys by himself for 45 minutes?
Someone must have recorded this data very meticulously centuries ago despite a bunch of this stuff done in secrecy.

Age of Samurai on Netflix
It's definitely interesting and worth it so far. Some docs are better than others, but still good.

I want to, saw it and was interested.
Same here. The girlfriend and I had plans to go to Japan before the pandemic hit. She was excited to see Tokyo and all that shit, whereas I really only want to see "old world" japan.
Getting a legit Tachi and Katana are still goals of mine.

Watched the first episode last night, I thought it was relatively interesting...wife did not want to watch it at all and thought it was terrible, so I will watch it when she's not around.

I would love to go to Japan. No interest in going to China but the wife and I will definitely make it to Japan at some point. I'm right there with you on the Tachi/Katana thing. There's a whole lot of Seppuku going down in this show. Not for me, I'd be gone to the West and make some money as a Ronin assassin.

I watched the whole season this past weekend. It's entertaining and well-done.
Random thoughts below: (SPOILER-ish?)
I watched with George Lucas/SW/samurai-influence in mind:
-Seeing Oda Nobunaga's name made think just George probably just added a Y to get Yoda.
-The familiar multi-syllabic name also made me think how asian Obi-wan Kenobi really sounds.
-The Vader-like helmets and masks are pretty intimidating and you can see why George went with that look for the baddies.
-You can see how the incremental use of gunfire (blasters) was going to change warfare and make samurai's (Jedi knights) virtually extinct.
-The katana is an elegant weapon, and was not as clumsy as a one shot musket, but there was nothing civilized about this Age. It was fricking brutal led by psychopaths/maniacs.
-Every time I saw a white/cream kimono, I thought about Luke's Ep IV shirt.
-I dd not know Ninja's were born out of rebellion/guerrilla warfare against Samurai rule. I always thought they were that period's Navy Seal/Spy division of Samurai's.
-Female spies were sleeping with generals, then killing them after they got their info. This James Bond fem-fatale shite has worked for 500 years (& throughout human history!)
-I can't believe how insanely violent the Samurai/Japanese once were, then after WW2, they became so pacifist/emasculated, they haven't had a single military action since.
-Many IMDb comments insist the series is not historically accurate but I don't care. It was entertaining.
End of spoilers.

Same here. Finally broke down and bought a katana a couple years back, more utilitarian than pretty but highly rated. It’s really fun to clear trails and chop around with. Probably the best thing I’ve used for doing that

Wife and I went to Japan a couple years ago. It’s definitely worth it. Don’t worry about Tokyo. See the shrines and museums and what not. They have huge samurai museum inside of some royal place in Tokyo. Cant think of what it was called.

Same. I thought it was excellent.

I finished it yesterday and thought it was just okay, but worth a watch overall.
I found it too re-enacting relative to actual substance. That would be my gripe, but I understand why.

All of this. I was thinking of Star Wars and anime motifs the whole time I was watching the series.
