No bueno. Jett's actually pretty reliable with Batman news, so this is a bit concerning.

quote:

For the last several months, we all thought that Ben Afleck’s solo Batman film – THE BATMAN – was set to start filming this spring. Both Jeremy Irons – who will play Alfred Pennyworth – and Joe Manganiello – who will play the villain Deathstroke – have said so. Even Ben Affleck himself said last month that it was “the plan” to go in front of the camera early in 2017.

Apparently, the brakes on the Batmobile have been tapped.

According to a longtime BOF source, THE BATMAN has been “pushed back.” How long? “A couple of months” I was told. If this is indeed the case, it means that THE BATMAN won’t start filming until mid-Summer at the earlier. Thus, a July 2018 release now will be in question as will a release in 2018 period.

So, why the delay? I really don’t know, but I’ll speculate…

Perhaps the script really isn’t ready as Ben Affleck has been saying and the studio is giving director/screenwriter Affleck the proper amount of time to get it right.

Maybe Ben doesn’t want to direct it, but will still write, produce and star in it. As a result, they need time to hire a new director.

Or – and this would be the worst case scenario – perhaps Affleck knows that JUSTICE LEAGUE is going to suck (I'm hearing it's a mess -- I hope it's not!) and is ready to bail on the DCEU before he gets GIGLY’ed (again) by it.

Look, I hope (i.e. desparately want) that Ben Affleck directs THE BATMAN, so here’s hoping the reason behind this alleged delay in production the first hypothetical I proposed above. But, something’s up with THE BATMAN, no doubt about it. Could this be why Affleck's comments about THE BATMAN suddenly changed here recently? I'm not going to lie, I'm a bit worried, but I'll remain optimistic (because I really want this to happen).

its pretty obvious they need to go back to square one here. And completely revamp it. But I dont think DC/WB can.

The only passable move is MoS and that wasn't particularly good. BvS was fricking garbage. Suicide Squad was horrific. WW shows some promise but I think its going to suck.

I'm not going to say that - as I'm a Batman/Superman guy from a comics standpoint (at least back in the day ).

However, from a film franchise standpoint, Marvel's system - however hokey, cheesy and formulaic it might be (and however they have butchered up various storylines) - delivers a reasonably entertaining film for your cinema dollar. D.C. on the other hand is all over the place. There was never a cohesive effort to brand the films, market the films or package the films until very late when they realized how much money they could be making.

Justice League was somewhat promising, but going Affleck as Batman was clearly a mistake. Snyder's Supes was hit or miss with some folks and that should have been a red flag.

They should have done an across the board brand reboot before JL - gone with a younger (or at least youngish) cast and really worked on getting that done (the casting) - then spinoff the various heroes.

They're trying to graft and build, treating the symptoms and it doesn't seem to be working.

Affleck has been saying from the start that he wouldn't proceed until he was satisfied with his script. And he's never said that the script was in the can and ready to go.

They never cared for quality, they stole the idea from marvel and tried to make an easy quick buck, and it backfired.

Warner Brothers needs to just put the DC movies on ice for a few years. Maybe let the guys who do all those CW shows take over the concept. (I don't watch those shows, but I hear good buzz about them. It seems like they at least get the characters and they're goofy fun.) Just reboot everything and worry about getting stuff right, not building a series of movies.
Zach Snyder needs to handle things that are more in line with his talents, like directing tire commercials or Iggy Azalea videos. I rewatched Batman vs. Superman over the weekend....my God, there were just so many things wrong with it. The casting, the script, the direction. About the only things they got right was casting Ben Affleck and Jeremy Irons.

Handing that over to Zack Snyder, when they had full knowledge of how much he had struggled already, was real brilliant, forward thinking.

They took in 1.6 Billion from their two DC films last year. Their only other film to approach that success was their Harry Potter spinoff. They're not putting anything on ice.

HE DOESN'T GET SUPERMAN!!!
Read All-Star Superman or watch the animated version of it. Compare that to the turgid, dark garbage that Snyder cranked out. The difference is night and day. The assholes at WB were like "Hmmm. The Nolan Batman movies were dark and made a mint. That's the formula for all the DC movies!!"

Why Ace? Affleck is a great Batman and was the highlight of BvS for me by far.

Affleck on Kimmel last night:

quote:

“I’m going to direct the next Batman, we’re working on it. It’s one of those things that’s really frustrating because Live by Night took me a year and a half to write it and get it ready, and worked really hard. It’s just that nobody gave a s—, no one was like ‘Where’s Live by Night!,’ but with Batman I keep on getting ‘Where’s the f—— Batman!’. Wow, I’m working, give me a second!”

Maybe so. But, he's too old. You'll be hard pressed to get 8 to 10 years (5 to 6 films, including team films) out of him. Now - RDJ started playing Iron Man at 43 - but let's be honest, Affleck isn't really RDJ's equal - in really any area. I guess with modern technology, they can overcome any aging of Batman.

Just for reference Affleck is 11 years older than Cavill and 14 years older than Gadot - only Adams is roughly Affleck's age and she will be the easiest to recast going forward. By the time they get to the sequel to JL, Affleck will be damned near 50.

Plus - he's got career as a director going, and ultimately that's a tough balance, unless they're going to start letting him direct the things (ETA: I didn't think they would, but apparently I stand corrected on that).

BTW, the Affleck Batman film and the Harley spinoff were lagniappe from the BvS and Suicide Squad performances. It's not like Flash being pushed back or the Cyborg and Inhumans films falling off of their schedules. WB lucked out with Affleck being a plus in BvS and his being available to do a Batman film. My bet is that they'll make room for him whenever he says he's ready to proceed.

What a hot take. "The Batman has been delayed. It could be for perfectly normal reasons. It could be because the thing is going to blow up. It could be that the entire franchise sucks flaccid cock. Who knows? What we do know is that I'm a reporter with nothing to report, so he's a report about nothing. Now click my clickbait."
