Chris Pratt
Bradley Cooper
George Clooney

Any particular reason why I have these down votes? Chris Pratt's big break was Guardians of the Galaxy. He was 35 when that film was released. Bradley Cooper's big break was The Hangover. He was 34 when that film was released. George Clooney's big break was ER. That show's first season premiered when he was 33.

Pratt went from a middling sitcom role player to a mega star in no time.

Tom Hanks really became a star with Big when he was 32. Before that star on TV and prior to big did Splash and few others but I think it was Big that started it all for Hanks.

But it was closer to 40 when he did Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, and Apollo 13

Robin Williams the same as he got his start in TV with Mork and Mindy and then in his late 30s his film career took off with Good Morning Vietnam.

Yeah, I don't think 32 is later in life. Early-mid 30s seems to be the time when a lot actors attain movie star status.

I think the premise should probably be after 40+

John Travolta had an early success but I believe his career took at 40 when he did Pulp Fiction. Created a new persona for him and changed his whole acting career IMO.

Tom Hanks is a little bit harder to nail down because he just kind of...appeared. He had that sitcom Bosom Buddies that was on for a couple of seasons in the early-80s. However, I'd argue Hanks's big break came in 1982 when he guest starred on that one episode of Happy Days. Within a year he was filming his first starring vehicle (Splash) with Ron Howard directing him and Daryl Hannah. It was one of the 10 highest grossing films of 1984.

I was going by the OP at least 30. Hanks was 38 and 39 for Philadelphia and Forest Gump, which made him one of the biggest actors in Hollywood.

I think Boris Karloff was in his 40's when he got the role of Frankenstein.

Also Kathy Bates I think was in her 40's when Misery came out.

Leslie Nielson was in his 50s in Airplane!

I know he was a dramatic actor prior, but that movie definitely made him a more household name.

Not even counting Big (1988), Hanks had the best fun of any actor ever starting in 1992.

A league of their own
Sleepless in Seattle
Philadelphia
Forrest Gump
Apollo 13
Toy Story
(That thing you do) - Not really great, but it’s was more of a chance for him to try out his directing skills.
Saving Private Ryan
Toy Story 2
Cast Away
Catch Me If You Can

...2004 was his first off-track year in forever with The Terminal and The Ladykillers.

I agree but I think it was not until the other 2 I mentioned that made him a A list star for films.

The 80s were the greatest error for maybe the movie theaters. Special effects were on the rise, they were attached to the big malls, and so many were opening everywhere. It was not until deregulation of the cable companies in the mid 80's could TV even compete, so movies were king of entertainment and movie theaters and malls with arcades was were everyone went on the weekend. That being said any movie, genre, or star was going to be scene.

Steve Carell was like 40 when he hit that Bruce Almighty/The Office/40 yr Old Virgin stretch.

I wouldnt consider his presence on the Daily Show as a big break.
