ABC News Nightline: Chernobyl Accident - 04/28/86
YouTube

A recording of Nightline in '86 discussing Chernobyl 2 days after it happened (and the same day the West learned 'the truth')

Fascinating look at not only how fricked up things were with Russia, including clips from Soviet television, but at how different the news was back before the 24 hour news cycle and "gotcha" journalism.

Just watched it and probably watched in '86 because ABC is all I think we had that year.

I miss real news, journalists and anchors were respected and they treated us with respect.

Nobody knew what the frick was going on until the Soviets decided to tell everyone what the frick was going on.

And then they told us bullshitee.

We seemed to know a lot about it early on. Almost like we had someone on the inside who knew what was going to happen.

Man I miss watching ABC nightly news with Peter Jennings.

reminds me of childhood and when it was on TV, I could always smell dinner.

Same, but my folks were Dan Rather fans so we watched the CBS news.

I grew up in a CBS family. Cronkite was the voice of God.

But Nightline was something unique, starting with the Iran hostage crisis. In '86 I had a VCR taping Carson & Letterman while I watched Nightline, waiting for WBRZ to play Star Trek reruns directly after. (Pre-Iran-Hostage, WBRZ would play M*A*S*H, Rockford Files, Star Trek after their 10p News. VCR heaven.)

I was watching Nightline live the night that Al Capanis made his famous statement about blacks not having the abilities to be baseball managers, quarterbacks, or swimmers. (Capanis clip on YouTube) Wild to watch someone throw their job away on live TV.

I was in high school living in Germany at this time. We only had AFN to watch. But I remember watching a lot of coverage of Chernobyl at the time. There was significant fear in Germany of the disaster.

Some peeps in the know, claim a bunch of shite from the HBO documentary was as fake news as CNN/Fox news.

I've only seen people talking about how accurate it was for a tv mini-series.

What are your peeps disputing? Seemed to perfectly show faulty engineering mixed with incompetent bureaucracy. Toss in fear of losing your job forever and it was a major recipe for disaster.

I know they combined many people into one person for the narrative but what do your in the know peeps claim was fake?

There’s a (mostly, if not entirely Russian) conspiracy theory that the CIA caused the meltdown.
