re: A&E Biography is back: Shawn Michaels premiere
I'm not even a die hard fan (at least not since I was like ten), but I knew most of the stuff. It just wasn't too informative IMO.

But I still enjoyed it and enjoy this series. I'm all for nostalgia, and wrestling was a big part of my childhood, so I am loving these docs and all the old footage I remember watching as a wide-eyed kid.

Can't wait for the Ultimate Warrior and Mick Foley ones. I was an UW fan as a kid. I'll never forget my mom took me to see the WWF in the Centroplex in downtown BR. And I was nine (almost ten) years old and had my UW t-shirt on. He was fighting Andre the Giant and I was GEEKED for it. And the entire match lasted like 30 seconds. UW sprints out and runs around the ring once or twice, then runs into the ring and starts hitting the ropes back and forth. I'll never forget it. He goes rope, rope, rope, clothesline, rope clothesline, rope, rope, clothesline, and then pins him. Then he sprinted back out the ring and it was over/time to go home.

The entire time UW was out there lasted MAYBE one minute. I was so upset, and my mom was furious.

Found the match on youtube: Hilarious.

That is funny. He was my fav too. That was kinda UW's deal though...he was like Mike Tyson at the time. Get in, kill the opponent, and get out. BUT, I can imagine the disappointment as a kid getting that product. I would've been pissed too.

Don't think so.

No where near the access or footage without them.

They didn't pull many punches with Macho Man and his flaws.

re: A&E Biography is back: Shawn Michaels premiere
Here's my Randy Savage story. My brother won tickets in a contest to see the wresting at Rupp Arena, late 70's. We were on our way to Lexington and saw a van on the side of the road with some guy standing around.
My brother was a mechanic, so we stopped. It turned out to be a van full of wrestlers for that night's show, including Randy his and brother Lanny Poffo.

They had a flat tire, but no tire iron. We helped fix it for them to get them there, and they let us watch from backstage. This was way before Randy was "famous".

The biggest problem with these biographies is that they refuse to acknowledge that it's scripted. MM bio was pretty good and indirectly talked about it being scripted.

Agreed. After looking at that video of him getting his Hall of Fame ring, it’s obvious that Shawn was more of a bottom guy

What do you mean? Do you need them to tell you directly that it's scripted? Every single person watching knows it is, and in the MMRS one they literally talked about and showed the legal pad notes/steps of he and Ricky Steamboat's big Wrestlemania match. I mean, that's literally a script of the entire match.

160 moves, that was scripted. There was no refusal to acknowledge it.

It's because Vince isn't trying to protect Randy and the WWF/E like he does other wrestlers. Randy was never invited back to WWF like basically all the other former stars that left for WCW and were eventually embraced again.

Savage was always, always on the outs with WWF for whatever reason (the Stephanie rumors have always been out there, but who knows if they're true), plus all of the crazy Miss Elizabeth/Lex Luger stuff happened in WCW and not in WWF, so Vince is gleefuy happy to let that stuff get shown in the doc.

The one semi-contoversial thing that happened to randy during his WWF days was that he used Elizabeth as a shield snd then Jake Roberts slapped her. And what do you know, Bruce Pritchard does an obvious overdubbed voiceover on the clip that was added in later (I guarantee at Vince's forcing) to say they'd never do that now.

See, as long as these docs don't make Vince or the WWF look bad, it's OK to expose a wrestlers problems and shite on them or any other promotion. But as soon as it gets too close to home, then Big Brother gets involved and re-writes history.

Just because they didnt flat out call it scripted doesnt mean they refused to.

I recall several times in the austin one they called it a work which is wrestling jargon for fake.

Besides everyone knows the deal so why does it matter?

I get it dude, the only way these docs are going to be satisfying to you would be if they put Vince McMahon in the worst possible light.

That about cover it?

Bret Hart is such a mark for himself the true story of this may never be known. I'm way more inclined to believe Vince and HBK on this.

Michaels is and will always be a great great performer, but never a true drawing champion.

Did you stop watching in 2000?

ETA He didn't draw as much money as Hogan, Austin, Rock, or Cena....BUT damn who did...nobody. He is at the top of the list after that group. He is a top 2-3 wrestler of all time all things considered.

ETA2 All the stuff that Micheals did with Diesel, and the Kliq in general, laid the ground work for the change in the business that allowed Stone Cold Steve Austin to be born at KOTR 1997.

Shawn Michaels "got big" after I lost interest in wrestling. But man oh man I was gigantic Rockers fan. So for his episode, I imagine I will love the Rockers portion of it and then not really care about anything else (outside of the Screwjob which I assume will only be touched on a little bit).

I don't know that Vince is "gleefully happy" to have that stuff shown. Bruce Prichard has said on his podcast that Randy's departure from WWE (along with Hogan's) hurt Vince the most because he never believed Randy would actually leave. He has also claimed that Randy was offered HOF induction when he was still alive, but declined unless his dad and brother were inducted with him.

Now if you don't believe Prichard, that's fine, but he recorded these podcasts shortly after Stephanie fired him from the company again, so he didn't have any reason to lie.

As far as the doc itself, it was fine. The time spent on Elizabeth didn't bother me because she was such a part of the Macho Man package, even after they separated and reunited at WCW. I was more bothered by the time wasted with Gorgeous George. And then her sister who was interviewed "off camera", but didn't really reveal much other than they liked to party.

They did that same match dozens of times at various arenas around the country. Andre’s claim was that the bell never rang, so therefore it shouldn’t count. The card at the Centroplex you’re referring to was on November 10, 1989. I was there also.

Other matches on the card:

The Canadian Earthquake pinned Tim Horner
Al Perez pinned Barry Horowitz
Ronnie Garvin & Greg Valentine fought to a draw
Hercules defeated Akeem by countout
The Honky Tonk Man pinned The Red Rooster
The Rockers defeated The Fabulous Rougeau Bros.

Michaels is nowhere near Top 3 all-time overall. As a performer maybe, but he wasn’t a top draw and his overall impact pales in comparison to many others.
