Are you serious with this? Yes, he was a backstage jerk. But he was a HUGE draw at the time. And one of the greatest entertainers ever- huge pop and heat back and forth. Pound for pound, probably the best wrestler of all time.

Yeah was gotten write the same post, how the frick could anyone say Michael's wasn't that big of a draw. I think he was the probably the biggest star of his time, even coming to overshadow Hart prior to the Rock and Steve Austin's significant emergence

The argument to that is the business way down when he was champ. And he was in the title picture while WCW was pushing their shite in. Obviously he helped dig them out with DX and the build to Austin/Tyson, but he left for awhile after that match and that's when WWF took off into the stratosphere.

re: A&E Biography is back: Shawn Michaels premiere
Sorry, but as a wrestling historian for the past 30+ years, I can attest that Michaels wasn’t a good draw at all during his time on top. Most people think that Diesel was the lowest-drawing champion pre-2000, and on the house show circuit, that was indeed the case. But in terms of ppv buys, Michaels was the lowest.

Royal Rumble PPV buyrates:
(1.10) - Bret Hart vs. Taker - RR 96
(1.00) - Diesel vs. Bret Hart - RR 95
(0.90) - Yokozuna vs. Taker - RR 94
(0.70) - HBK vs. Sid - RR 97

WrestleMania PPV buyrates:
(1.68 grossing $5.2 million) - Bret Hart vs. Yokozuna - WM 94
(1.40 grossing $5.1 million) - Diesel vs. HBK - WM 95
(1.20 grossing $4.0 million) - HBK vs. Bret Hart - WM 96
(0.77 grossing $2.5 million) - Taker vs. Sid - WM 97

King of the Ring PPV buyrates:
(0.85) - Piper vs. Lawler - KOTR 94
(0.65 ) - Diesel/Bigelow vs. Sid/Tatanka - KOTR 95
(0.60) - HBK vs. Bulldog - KOTR 96
(0.50) - Taker vs. Farooq - KOTR 97

SummerSlam PPV buyrates:
(1.30) - Taker vs. Taker - SS 94
(0.90) - Diesel vs. Mabel - SS 95
(0.80) - Bret Hart vs. Taker - SS 97
(0.58) - HBK vs. Vader - SS 96

Survivor Series PPV buyrate:
(0.90) - Taker vs. Yokozuna - SS 94
(0.89) - Bret Hart vs. HBK - SS 97
(0.58) - HBK vs. Sid - SS 96
(0.57) - Diesel vs. Bret Hart - SS 95

In Your House PPV buyrates:
(0.83) - Diesel vs. Sid - IYH 1 [14 May 95]
(0.75) - Diesel vs. Bret Hart - IYH 6 [18 Feb 96]
(0.70) - Diesel vs. Sid - IYH 2 [23 July 95]
(0.70) - Diesel/HBK vs. Yokozuna/Bulldog - IYH 3 [24 Sept 95]
(0.65) - Diesel vs. HBK - IYH 7 [28 April 96]
(0.60) - HBK vs. Taker - IYH 18 [5 Oct 97]
(0.59) - Hart Foundation vs. Team USA - IYH 16 [6 July 97]
(0.57) - Austin vs. Taker - IYH 15 [11 May 97]
(0.50) - Bret Hart vs Taker vs Austin vs Vader - IYH 13 [16 Feb 97]
(0.50) - Bret Hart vs. Austin - IYH 14 [20 April 97]
(0.48) - HBK vs. Mankind - IYH 10 [22 Sept 96]
(0.45) - HBK vs. Bulldog - IYH 8 [26 & 28 May 96]
(0.45) - HBK vs. Taker - IYH 17 [7 Sept 97]
(0.44) - HBK vs. Shamrock - IYH 19 [7 Dec 97]
(0.40) - Diesel vs. Bulldog - IYH 4 [22 Oct 95]
(0.40) - Taker vs. Mankind - IYH 11 [20 Oct 96]
(0.37) - Vader/Owen/Bulldog vs. HBK/AJ/Sid - IYH 9 [21 July 96]
(0.35) - Bret Hart vs. Sid - IYH 12 [15 Dec 96]
(0.33) - Bret Hart vs. Bulldog - IYH 5 [17 Dec 95]

Diesel/HBK comparison:
(1.00) RR 95 - (0.70) RR 97 (bigger draw = Diesel)
(1.40) WM 95 - (1.20) WM 96 (bigger draw = Diesel)
(0.83) IYH May 95 - (0.45) IYH May 96 (bigger draw = Diesel)
(0.65) KOTR 95 - (0.60) KOTR 96 (bigger draw = Diesel)
(0.70) IYH July 95 - (0.37) IYH July 96 (bigger draw = Diesel)
(0.90) SS 95 - (0.58) SS 96 (bigger draw = Diesel)
(0.70) IYH Sept 95 - (0.48) IYH Sept 96 (bigger draw = Diesel)

He was popular with women and kids, but most adult males in the key demographic couldn’t stand Shawn. Fortunately back then WWE taped shows in advance and was able to edit them. There were multiple shows I attended where Shawn was loudly booed during times he was a babyface champ. In Biloxi at a taping, they were doing a taped interview and the fans started chanting “SHAWN IS GAY” and he totally flubbed his lines, and stormed out of the ring, pissed. Later that evening was RAW, live. The chant started again but apparently the WWE suits told him how to deal with them, because he had some comebacks, albeit on a 7th grade level. Vince was on commentary and was scowling at the chanters, who were relentless. It was the same thing in Lafayette and other towns along the Gulf Coast, to the point that he didn’t appear on some shows in that region for a while.

That is an interesting look that Shawn gives him. The comments are turned off on this one specifically

I had never seen that clip before.

Straight men don't kiss and act that way. Vince and Shawn definitely played hide the pickle.

re: A&E Biography is back: Shawn Michaels premiere
Michaels was never a real top guy. He got the belt by default when the WWF exodus occurred in the early-mid 90s... And there was basically nobody else left to turn to. It was basically him and Bret Hart and that was it.

If he was such a draw, then WWF wouldnt have been in the situation they were in in 95-96, where they were basically bankrupt.

Austin literally saved the entire company. And Austin did it with his ideas... Not WWF's. If Pritchard and Vince they had their way, he would have been The Ringmaster for eternity and WWF would have likely died. But they were desperate and Austin was persistent.

Michaels is and will always be a great great performer, but never a true drawing champion. There's nothing about him other than his in ring stuff that makes people want to pay money to come see him. That was especislly the case in 95-96.

He presided over the biggest financial disaster in WWF history. On his run, Wrestlemania wenr from football stadiums and domes to 17,000 seat NBA arenas.

Even in DX, Michaels was not the top guy. He was and always will be a secondary player to the likes of Austin, Rock, Hogan, and even his butt buddies HHH, Hall and Nash. Hunter became a good drawing heel and Hall and Nash (along with Hogan) were THE guys in WCWs 96-97 run that nearly killed Vince and WWF.

McMahon and Michaels should wash Austin's feet and kiss his arse every day for the as long as they live. They should do the same for Bret Hart, too. Because Bret and the Hart foundation gave Austin his first real adversaries, plus he made Vince into Mr McMahon and cemented Michaels in infamy with the screw job.

Bret, by not wanting to lay down to Michaels and his backstage bullshite, helped propelled the company to its early wins against WCW on his way out the door.

I agree, but..look who he was working with.

As a guy who is 6' tall and around 220..he was going up against Diesel, Undertaker, Vader, Yoko, Sid, etc for the most part. Those guys were massive in comparison and had Shawn working in ways that were awkward to make buyable. But he did it and allowed his personality to compensate.

He was ahead of his time in that era and even though buyrate numbers at the time don't show it, him and Bret helped open the door for more exciting and technical wrestling that eventually came. Through his in ring efforts, people stopped hating Shawn and started loving to hate him..which is a big difference.

Numbers should take into consideration the competition of a champion too. People weren't watching because of boring competition. People can say what they want, but the bad blood 97 Shawn vs taker was a great match. Now, Undertaker wouldn't have been able to do that with diesel, yoko, Vader, etc. Throwing Shawn in the mix gave matches more dimensions, which as we found out is huge when you have a television production crew wanting to shoot good matches.

Only one that is on par with that bad blood hell in the cell is Foley, and only cause he was an anomaly himself.

Macho Man trailer:

LINK

Airs tonight at 7 C. This man lived his gimmick.

The voice, I believe was all a put on that he actually carried into his real life. I think I've heard his brother say in past interviews he used to talk normal, but then "The Macho Man" got over and Randy Poffo never existed again.

re: A&E Biography is back: Shawn Michaels premiere
Decent doc I guess, but it felt like there wasn't much information in it. It also felt kinda repetitive and was basically people talking about MMRS for two hours and doing their best impressions of him rather than being informative. And then it turned into a Miss Elizabeth documentary. I think there was one segment where they didn't even mention Savage and focused solely on Elizabeth and Lex Luger.

I still enjoyed it though. Not particularly looking forward to the Booker T one, as he was never someone I cared for and I had kinda gotten out of wrestling by the time he came around.

I think Lex Luger is the most obvious steroid user of all time. That dude looks like a completely different person now that he's older and off the juice. He looks oddly shaped now as well. It's so strange how different he looks.

Wasn't that bad to me, I guess it was more nostalgia than anything else. MMRS was a trip. How he talked like that all the time amazes me.

They did focus too much on Elizabeth after they split. He had moved on from her. Unnecessary.
