re: 40 years ago today, we found out who shot J.R.
That's incredible but not surprising. Remember, cable TV was just starting and not many people had it yet so there were three networks and a few local stations to choose from; therefore, if a show captured a lot of attention, the supply of shows was so small that it would become part of the culture (or "water-cooler" talk as it was known then). It was really unique.

Dallas was an incredible show with solid characters and storylines...not to mention the greatest villain in TV history IMHO. It got silly toward the end of the series, but it had a fantastic ground-breaking run during the 80s.

Is this an all Time tv cliffhanger ?

If memory serves, it was the first real season-ending cliffhanger.

Aside from the dramas like Falcon Crest, Dallas, Dynasty, etc. pretty much every other primetime show was highly episodic with pretty much only cast changes carrying into later episodes. This season-ending cliff-hanger was so huge that it one of the things that changed the way tv series were written.

"Who shot J.R.?" became its own merchandising universe and was a primary topic of conversation among most age groups that entire summer.
