In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, an elite unit made up of CIA operatives and U.S. Special Forces were sent to Afghanistan to help pave the way for the eventual Coalition invasion. During their tour in country they would fight the Taliban and Al-Qaeda mainly on horseback. In a pre-invasion battle, fighting alongside the Northern Alliance, they became the first Americans to participate in a mass cavalry charge since the end of the 19th century.

That trailer looks like it might be a good movie that's BASED on a true story.

Jawbreaker, First In and Horse Soldiers are all good books about the CIA and Green Berets first few months in Afghanistan. There were US Army Special Forces operating on horseback and the was a cavalry charge, but for the most part, these A-teams were identifying Taliban targets and calling in air strikes. It wasn't "Mount up, we're going to lead a cavalry charge on those T-72s." SF guys are tough and brave, but they're smart, too.

I'm not trying at all to minimize what these men accomplished. These TF Dagger teams were isolated and fighting with sketchy warlords, who were only their "allies" because they had been given a pile of cash by the CIA. They've got gigantic balls. I hope they get some of the money this movie makes.

The first American presence in Afghanistan, post 9/11, was a CIA team that flew into the Panjshir Valley on 9/29. CIA Air Branch pilots ferried them in an old Soviet Mi-17 helicopter from Uzbekistan because Army Aviation refused to fly without Search and Rescue assets in place. For similar reasons, the first A-team (ODA 555) didn't arrive until 10/19.

The CIA walked or used local vehicles for transportation. When SF arrived, they brought a couple of John Deere Gators with them. There was nothing like a Humvee involved. They were trying to keep a low profile. Subsequently, the SF teams to the NW used the local ponies, same as the local tribesmen. The team(s) with Gen. Dostum are the Horse Soldiers. They did advance in battle on horseback, but I think it was more of mopping up after air strikes, than an initial frontal assault kind of thing.

I expect that the movie might be entertaining. I just hope the story isn't ruined by being completely Hollywood-ized. We Were Soldiers is a prime example. It was historically accurate up until the very end, when it went full retard. It ruined what had been a great movie for me. Black Hawk Down stuck pretty close to reality.

Maybe DARPA got together with the Skunkworks and developed a stealth horse and their work has recently been declassified. Or maybe not.

Horse Soldiers was published in 2009. I'm almost positive that the author, Doug Stanton, was not embedded with ODA-595 and researched the book through open sources and interviews with the particulars. I'm not sure what could have recently been "declassified". Again, a case of Hollywood trying to create additional drama where none is needed.

It is a stupid title. Not gonna lie. They were originally going to call it The Horse Soldiers but apparently that name was already taken and I guess they couldn't use it for some reason.

I would have been fine with 12 Strong. When I watched the trailer in the theater and they announced the full title I literally lol’d.

The Horse Soldiers is a John Wayne movie of some note if you are a fan of that sort of thing.

Somebody involved in this movie probably knew that.
