Would you rather be the coach of Alabama or of the Steelers
A God in college or head coach in the NFL with one of its most storied franchises?

Ask Pete Carroll. He would know better than most.

Alabama, essentially complete control of the football program and you aren't dealing with players with contracts that likely exceed yours, players rely on you to elevate them to the pros and will do whatever you say

Alabama,

In the NFL they don't turn over all the keys to all the doors.

re: Would you rather be the coach of Alabama or of the Steelers
Sorry, ask Nick Saban.

Was he successful with a famous NFL franchise that Don Shula had tremendous success...

Or was he successful at lower tier football?

It appears one is a LOT easier to be successful if you butter the bread. Pete Carroll and Saban proved this. Actually Pete was able to get glory in both.

But who wants all the headache of the recruiting nonsense.

I'd rather deal with Pros even if its more difficult to win than petulant teenagers who want bags of money and constant love.

Steelers. You actually have an off-season and don’t have to recruit 24/7

Not UA. They have no other sport, so it is 24/7. I'd pick USC. You can obtain the same goals, live in LA, and have a break from football.

Steelers for player continuity. In college you have to build new players every year more so than pro.

NFL you can retain the same players for a decade.

Steelers have had 3 HCs since 1969.

Alabama will fire you if you don’t win 10 games consistently and compete for national titles

This is a no brainer

You still get this in the NFL.

College is an oxymoron. The job sucks. It's a lot of work and cajoling and massaging egos and daily text messages to every Tom Dick and Harry you might be interested in.

But its way easier to win because you can totally separate yourself from your competition.

You can't do that in the Pros - everyone is within striking distance even.

But I"d rather have the NFL job...because you can draft a few good guys and be golden for a long time...just look at the 70's Steelers - they had maybe 2 drafts that set them up for a decade.

College is just turnover after turnover...sure you can dominate like Jimmy Johnson and Carroll and Saban but you have to repeat the process every year...over and over...refilling the squad.

CFB isn't really about coaching.

It's all recruiting. Best players win...and if you have the best players in college you will always win. It's not coaching at all.

In the NFL you can have the best players and lose. Because coaching matters. So CFB is always won in Febuary.

The Browns haven't really been since the rebirth in the late 90's.

Buffalo also had a huge playoff drought that finally ended this past season.

there have always been a few teams that have no shot whatsoever. There are a few teams that figure it out every once in awhile and make a run all of a sudden
though (Jacksonville) this past year for example.

lately it seems like the gap has widened and I agree somewhat with what you are saying. There were a handful of programs with great traditions last year who stunk something awful. But a lot of it had to do with coaches who just plain couldn't cut it. It's not like they were working with a bunch of no talent/clueless players.

Yeah like USC.

The fact they weren't a playoff team is pathetic coaching. Ohio State didn't really have the team to make the playoffs (close) and still whipped USC.

So obviously coaching still matters - but horses can hide bad coaching.

There is no hiding in the NFL. Everyone has basically the same horses...except BB at QB in New England. He got the luck of the draw.

as evidenced by the coaching turnover each year. Black Monday is usually good for at least 5 head coaching changes.

But look at the coaching turnover in college ball these days. The SEC had five coaching changes alone after this past season. Oregon, Florida State, Nebraska, and UCLA also made changes. Seriously.. what in the hell is going on in CFB??/

not for much longer though. I think this coming up year will be Brady's last but its just my opinion.

It's pretty crazy how Brady at his age had his best Super Bowl performance ever recently vs. Philly but it wasn't enough to knock off a team who had to start a backup QB Nick Foles. New England had to come from behind in the AFC championship to beat the Jacksonville Jags to even get to that point. No one in their right mind would have said that's what'd take for New England to get back to the Super Bowl before the 2017 season started.

That's also because the Steelers hit home run hires 3 times in a row. It's not like they hired Ben McAdoo and waited for him to pan out. The closest they probably got to firing a guy was Cowher, and even then he finally won a super bowl after like 10-15 years. Tomlin won one in his second.

They are extremely patient, which allows the coach to set up his system completely and get his players and not have to look over his shoulder

That’s not something you get with pretty much any other NFL franchise.
