According to @WindhorstESPN, a potential scenario the Warriors are discussing is signing Kevin Durant to a 5-Year contract, take care of him financially, rehab him, and then potential work with him to be traded.

Why would any team do this? If Durant has no plans to be at Golden St., just wait until he's a free agent.

this is a worse idea than tampa's 2 city idea. i guess GSW will trade him to his destination but don't want to lose his value... but then why would KD want to deplete the team he's going to?

When would this trade happen?

I’m assuming after rehab.

Why wouldn’t they just see if he’s still amazing and then, like, put him in the starting 5?

Im guessing for the assets to receive in return. Not sure of the amount they would have to pat in luxury taxes would be worth that though.

pretty big risk to sign him to a long-term deal without knowing whether he'll recover successfully from his injury. "take care of him financially" sounds like a max deal kind of situation too. What's in it for them? If he's back, why trade him. If he's not, you're not getting equal value for that contract back.

This is the second best solution the Warriors could ask for better than him walking for nothing.

in other words: we fricked up the whole situation to begin with and are now scrambling to keep everything from coming out

From what I’m understanding, it’s that KD would have informed the team that he wants to be traded but after they sign him the deal. He gets to dictate where he wants to go plus the 5yr max and the Warriors still get to get back assets.

5-Year contract

at $57 million, too... hell of a deal, but also a hell of a gamble, considering it's his Achilles heel...

he will not be the same player as before, that much is almost certain, but are you willing to pay for an 80% healthy KD? 90%? 95%? that's the risk you'd have to take to do this deal...

Probably because of that $1.5 billion annual price tag between all the max contracts and luxury tax they’re going to be on the hook for.

a team who doesn’t have the cap space to sign him could still trade for him

It's probably more about Durant. He could sign the max with GS for 5 years and get more security, then leave.

GS would do it bc it helps them get a return if he wants out. The trading parter has no choice.

LeBron actually went to Miami on a sign and trade like this.

Give me a break. KD had his own doctor give a second opinion and was told he could play. KD is a grown arse man who made his own decision.

50 million US dollars.

That's the difference between gsw 5 year deal and what the field can offer.

50 million dollars

50 million
