A lot of the big retired guys still do a TON to promote basketball, announcing, camps, development stuff etc... Hell a ton of current guys do it to

Obviously MJ has his shoes and he owns the Hornets. I’m not saying he doesn’t do anything for basketball. But considering who he is he doesn’t do as much as other guys like Shaq, Kobe (RIP), Barkley, Lebron etc....

Does he not want the attention anymore? Or am I way off base with this and just don’t know about all the stuff he does to promote the game

MJ has given everything to the game of basketball. He owes nobody nothing. Guy seems to value his privacy above everything, which is easy when you are a billionaire

MJ did more for basketball than anyone that's ever existed. These guys wouldn't see a fraction of the money they get if it weren't for MJ.

Shoe deals, global recognition, etc.

MJ doesnt have to be label an ambassador because his mere existence fulfilled that role 100 times over.

What do Shaq and Barkley do besides Inside the NBA?

Also, Kobe has gone on record multiple times before his death how he didn't even watch basketball from the day he retired to until Gianna showed an interest in basketball almost 2 years after the fact.

Oh I agree he doesn’t need to do shite he’s got nothing to prove. I’m just curious as to why he decides not to do more than behind the scenes ownership stuff. He didn’t seem like a guy that hated the attention

His name and initials alone getting mentioned in the basketball community are enough. He owns a team, and honestly I probably wouldn’t know much about the stars of the NBA in the 90’s without the movie Space Jam.

Whatever Kobe’s reasons were he was certainly very involved in promoting the game of basketball in his retirement. He hosted tournaments, skills camps, did all the stuff with his daughters, his show on ESPN+

He did all of that maybe within the last year. It's not like he immediately jumped into it right after his final game.

But again, what do Shaq and Barkley do?

Shaq is all over the damn TV. And for both of them choosing to do their show is a contribution to the game and definitely is promoting it.

MJ's name and shoe alone are all the ambassadorship the NBA needs, dude is an absolute titan without even lifting a finger

I don't think Shaq on goldbond or the general commercials does anything for the game of basketball.

I would argue a former player buying a team does more in terms of promotion.

Could argue he's harming the league by doing this. His team is one of the more poorly managed franchises.
