Also, I thought the clock stopped after every first down

Am I missing something here?

Clock is stopped to reset the chains, then restarted.

The clock only stays stopped when going out of bounds under 2 minutes in each half. Been that way for years now.

On a play that goes OOB, the clock runs after the ball is set until they get under two minutes left in each half.

It's not the 80's?

But I do miss the days when the clock really stopped after first downs and you didn't have to burn a T.O.

But people cried the games were too long. How the clock is stopped now is worthless...about 3-4 seconds and then its restarted.

The worst thing about it was it was never the clock stoppages that made the games too long. It was the slow creep into longer and longer commercial breaks. But of course the schools, conferences, ESPN and the other TV providers were NEVER going to talk about that being the issue.

No, people like Gus Mahlzahn wanted the ball spotted as fast as possible so that they could go fast. The coaches pushed for this. On a similar note, there are more plays run in the normal college football game than there used to be. No more huddle up, wait for another receiver to run the play into the huddle, and then snap the ball as the play clock is about to expire.

Did you know that now they only allow 11 players on each side of the ball and that throwing the ball forward is now legal grandpa?

The worst...getting ready for K.O.; commercial break; kick-off, commercial break; first play from scrimmage, commercial break.

You can find article after article of sportswriters complaining that the game was too long...all the way back to 2000 before the proliferation of hurry-up offenses.

quote:

In 2006, the sport overreacted way too much and disastrously used a running clock after changes of possession. Games got much shorter but the rules infuriated fans and coaches in the process because they made no sense.

I'm sure people like Gus wanted the ball spotted as quick as possible but that's a separate issue...just because the clock stopped after a 1st down didn't mean the refs just lolly-gagged around the field with it.

It was up to the offense if they wanted to use the clock stoppage to get their shite together or hike the ball immediately.

Hell remember there was at least one year where after each kickoff and BEFORE the first play from scrimmage was run, they wound the clock.
