Are they waiting each other out? Never thought they would still be unsigned at the start of Spring Training.

Nobody wants to pay them what they want to make.

Owners/GMs have finally gotten smart and decided to stop paying guys based on past performance and are paying for future performance now.

It seems like watching the end of the Pujols deal cripple the Angels is opening some eyes.

frick giving out 10 year deals to players that want 50mil a year. Thats just ignorant imo unless you have a player of Barry Bonds ability. Mike Trout is the only player I can think of right now that warrants it. Harper is too damn inconsistent.

So butthurt about this. Rumor was that Texas was going to pay whatever it took to get him next offseason.

Sure but even when accounting for prime age there is a very substantial chance, perhaps a likelihood, that teams won't get the benefit of their bargain at the discussed prices.

Plus both of them have probably harmed themselves some. Machado is a douche and Harper averaged like 2.5 war a season in the last three years. Plus Harper turned down 10/300m, so I struggle to see how this is an MLB problem (not saying this is your position but it's out there).

MLB players aren't considered in their prime years until 28. That would give any club 7 prime years of statistics, and 3 highly productive years for good measure. To act like this is a 32 year old asking for a 10 year deal is laughable.

Which means theyll be 36 by the time the deal is done. What if they start to decline at 31? Harpee already isnt worth even close to what he’s asking for. IMO, he’s not even worth what the Nats already offered him.

And? Will they be worth $40MM+ a year when they're 35? How often have players that have signed these mega long-term contracts been that valuable at the tail end of those contracts? When have those contracts ever been beneficial to the franchise that gave them? It's a business. Players are only worth what someone is willing to pay them. If no franchise is willing to offer a 10 year deal for upwards of a half a billion dollars, then they're not worth that much money.

Not to mention Harper isn't even worth that much right now IMO.

We're not, or at least I'm not.

We're correctly noting that prolonged mega deals bust often, and that even at prime ages they're extremely risky and are colossal anchors for all but a handful of teams.

That's plausible. Keep in mind Harper brings indirect revenue streams like most star athletes do.

They want 10 years AND at least $300m. They seem to unwilling to accept an offer that doesn’t meet both of those criteria.
