Wisconsin us pretty into football and basketball.

Badgers and Packers strong followings. High school football supported (but not like the South).

Badger basketball and Marquette basketball pretty strong programs and good crowds.

I would think the B1G states are more balanced in following in general for hoops and football.

Is there any state that is both basketball crazy and football crazy? Think about the states that are very passionate about basketball such as California, Kentucky, and North Carolina. None of those states have great football cultures. It’s all about basketball.

California high schools are still pushing out great recruits in football, it's just that a lot of them aren't staying in state. The other major college programs in California haven't capitalized on USC being in shambles right now. Coaches all over the country are now raiding the state for talent.

We say this a lot

And they haven’t been that

Butch Davis had a defense at one point that rivaled Bama based on NFL draft picks, etc.

Of course they were cheating their asses off and almost took down the basketball program with them when it all crashed down on their heads, but there is serious talent in NC, especially at DL.

It just gets split between a lot of places and the elite kids don’t usually stay home.

What was it like when UNC was good in the 80s and 90s? The schools there seem unable to keep blue chippers in state

It’s like Louisville when they’re good. Packed stadium, fun atmosphere, fans really into it. Would push all their football players off a cliff if it meant beating their rival in basketball.

UNC was a dropped pass away from a likely ACC Championship in 1987 (the two Clemson defenders bounced off each other and the UNC WR could have walked into the end zone. Had the pass been completed, we would have most likely beat a weak UVa team and a bad Dook team to win the conference.

Instead UNC loses all three and the coach gets fired.

It seemed like SEC teams would come in and grab the top players in the state. They still do, but not as much as in the past. Plus, the quality of high school football here has improved through the years.

UNC ripped out the bleachers and put in individual seats, reducing stadium capacity in the process. With the rerun of Mack, excitement around the program was the biggest in a while last year and we sold out every game. Hopefully for us it will be sustained with Howell and the upcoming recruiting classes.

The other factor is volume of power 5 schools dividing talent.

You have UNC, NC ST, Duke and Wake all located in Central NC within an hour of each other. There isn’t enough talent to go around when half the kids who would be playing football in AL are focused on basketball in NC

LSU has no one in state to recruit against.
Same for Ohio State.
UGA only has Tech.

Outside of TX, CA and FL all of whom are much bigger from a population standpoint no one has that kind of power 5 concentration per capita other than maybe Indiana (IU, PU & ND)

I remember the 1997 UNC team finishing in the top 4, then Mack Brown left and not much happened until Butch Davis apparently LINK

Mack left because that 1997 team went 10-1 and only got a Gator Bowl bid. Realizing that UNC football would always play second fiddle to basketball he left.

In 2001 UNC finally beat FSU and beat Auburn in the Peach Bowl, but stumbled the next year.

Hard to believe that the last UNC ACC football championship was 40 years ago this fall. Of the original ACC members still in the conference, only NC State has a longer football championship drought (1979).

I haven’t read the thread and I’m sure it’s been covered already, but Mack Brown is killing it in recruiting right now. He’s also got at least 5-6 years of excellent QB play ahead of him. (Sam Howell and Drake Maye)

IMO, they’re going to be challenging Clemson for the ACC for the next few years. Not Florida St or Miami

The age old question. Are KY/NC basketball states because of UK/UNC or are UK/UNC basketball schools because of KY/NC?

Kentucky and UNC were basketball schools when it was whites only so I’m going with because of them

California DGAF about sports.

. You wouldn't have tons of 5 star recruits for CFB and 9 Pro Teams and 3 schools (USC, UCLA, Stanford) with more National Titles than any other Conference and more Olympic medals than any other Conference if the State didn't care about sports.

BS UNC was a FB school WAY before they were a basketball school same with Duke.

NC State and WF started the ACC/NC basketball craze and both UNC and Duke had to improve their basketball programs to keep with their in-state rivals.

ECU actually had a really good small school

Who thinks of ECU as a "small school?" They've always been a mid-major/G5 school:20,000+ enrollment and 50,000+stadium

I would consider a "small school" a FCS,DII or DIII

Ok great. They aren’t now and haven’t been in 50 years.

Most everyone would consider a non-power five school with a direction in their name as small when compared to UNC or UGA or something.

California and the West don't have the same rabid football culture of the South and Midwest though. They care about many sports, even soccer ffs

Quite a leap putting UNC next to UGA in that regard

California cares more about "sports" than the South because as you point out the South only cares about CFB
...whereas California cares about basketball, Lakers, Warriors, Niners, NHL - 3 teams, COLLEGE SPORTS and yes, MLS.

And two of the most renowned high school football programs in the country with the most mythical H.S. National Championships reside in California.

And a third was named sports high school of the Century by Sports Illustrated in Long Beach Poly.

Yeah they have more of a general "athletics" culture whereas we are just rabid w/CFB (outside of KY and NC). There are/were lots of good college baseball programs out west before the SEC outside of LSU became interested in that
