Why does college football talk always devolve into playoff talk this early?

I understand the playoffs are what the season comes down to, but i dont need a breakdown every single week of which teams can get in the top 4 with 1 loss or 2 losses. I'd rather hear breakdowns of all the actual games that are being played than speculation over how everything is gonna shake up in 2 months. The playoff teams will have a full month in the spotlight when the season ends, i dont need 50 minutes of every hour long show to debate whats gonna happen if Washington and washington state and clemson all win out, these things tend to work themselves out as we saw this past weekend in one of the craziest weeks ive seen in a while

In all seriousness, it is college footballs top goal to win a National Title. You gotta get to the playoffs first, and if you lose more than 2 regular season games, you're basically out. And a lot of big brands in college football are out early or lose early. Always gotta talk about what these weekly loses do to teams playoff chances.

Well there were just 50+ games they could spend more than 15 seconds on at least a few of them

I agree, the playoff has killed my interest in shows that are devoted full time to college football, because that’s all it is now. It doesn’t take a genius to know if there is an undefeated or 1 loss conference champ, they are probably getting in. There is only so many ways you can say “we’ll see how things play out.”

What else are they going to talk about?

How the Tennessee vs. Alabama game will be over in 10 minutes?

Exactly.

And to the guy above me, im sure you would've said that about the clemson and syracuse game as well. There are matchups and plays every game that are way more interesting to me than how many games some random commentator is marking off as auto wins the rest of the way for any top 10 team. Talk about who deserves to go after conference championship week games are played, we only get 12 weeks of college football, im not just looking forward to watching the 3 playoff games and ignoring the rest

Only 4 teams get in. It's a lot easier to figure out earlier.

I don't see what's so hard the playoff is set

1. Alabama
2. Ohio State/Penn State winner
3. Clemson
4. Oklahoma

Be careful what you wish for.

Which is why CFB might be dying (that and Bama-fatigue).

In 1983 Miami was ranked #5 in the polls heading into the bowl games and won the Natty.

The polls were fluid up until the last day. Not this guaranteed BCS participants or now playoff teams. There is nothing anybody can do after the 4 playoff teams are picked.

Possibly. It could just as easily be:

1. Alabama/Georgia winner
2. Ohio State/Penn State winner
3. Miami/Clemson winner
4. Oklahoma/TCU winner

Or if Miami stumbles down the stretch and beats Clemson in the ACC championship game the ACC might get left out.

TCU beats OU regular season and loses to Oklahoma State, who also lost to Oklahoma, Big 12 might get left out.

Wisconsin could also play spoiler for a Big 10 team's chances.

Many different things can happen. That's why they talk about it.

What if Georgia beats Bama........cant put them in.

Especially if TCU wins the conference and is undefeated.

Oh but they will put Bama in no matter what.

Bama will need at least 2 losses to keep them out. Not saying its fair but thats what it is.
