Why do coaches wait to use timeouts after the 2 min warning?

If you use the timeouts before the 2 min warning, you would have more time if you get the ball back.
In tonight’s game, KC got a first down with around 2:30 left. TB had two timeouts.
If TB calls timeout, KC would run the ball on on 1st. A running play takes about 5 seconds.
TB calls final timeout. KC runs the ball on 2nd. Now game clock gets to the 2 min warning. KC runs the ball for 5 seconds on 3rd down and milk the clock for 40 seconds from the play clock. So the punt would take place with 75 seconds left.
But TB decided to let the clock go down to the two min warning. KC ran the ball 3 times. And by doing this, you get less time because you let the game clock go down 15 seconds (3 running plays) instead of 5 seconds(1 running play). You lose 10 seconds.
Now, it may not matter in this game but if you’re down 1 possession, it can be a difference maker.

If they had 10 more seconds they could have ran out of bounds on the last play, kicked a field goal, and had a chance at an onside kick.
I’ve been wondering why they don’t call the timeouts earlier for years

Only reason is that’s just always been the common thinking.
Also why fans get upset being aggressive on 4th downs.

Thank you, Pete.
I’ve been saying this for 20 years. Always falls on deaf ears.
But yes if use the timeouts earlier before the 2 minute warning, you can save yourself an extra 5, 10, 15 seconds afterwards depending how things shake out

Not just NFL coaches. I’ve always maintained you should take timeouts when playing defense. Why let the opposing offense run 40 seconds off the clock just to save a timeout for your offense. You just lost the opportunity for several offensive plays.

I just assume they want at least 1 timeout at their disposal when on offense. Gives them a chance to use the middle of the field, setup for FG, etc

When it's too close to the 2 minute warning then the other team can call a pass play because the clock is gonna stop anyway.

It was stupid. They should have called it before the 2 minute warning to get an extra stoppage. So dumb. Almost as bad as Kelly not declining that penalty on Sat night.

Yea it’s essentially the trade in time vs limiting the playbook by waiting. Also heaven forbid they get a first down on a long 2nd down run, you are dead in the water with no timeouts left

it was going to be 4th and 4 at their own 49 yard line and they had a lead. They would have punted.

Disagree. Converting on 3rd and 25 is very usual so I was ok with that decision.

Came here to post this exact thing. Take the timeouts when your opponent has the ball so you can maximize the amount of time you have. Having the timeouts for your possession minus the entire play clock for x amount of plays that the other team burned it is not more valuable than not having the timeouts and maximizing your game clock. When you have the ball you control the clock and can generate more plays and can stop it with spikes, incompletions, boundaries, and first downs (in the college game). Obviously game situation is a factor but when the situation guarantees you lose if the opponent gets a first down there is no reason not to burn the timeouts on their possession to maximize game clock.

Lol not for Matt House, it's a 50/50 at worst. He had the secondary up in run support on 3rd and 25

I offered James Franklin to manage Penn State’s game clock for him. Same issue, plus more. I haven’t heard back yet.
He probably figured it doesn’t make a difference. 7-5 either way.
