Why didn't the 2002 Yankees win the '02 World Series?

Seriously, this 2002 Yankees squad may have had one of the best teams in Yankee history:

The Yankees lost the 2002 American League Division Series, First Round to the Anaheim Angels, who won the 2002 World Series.

Shameful.

What?

It's baseball. And they lost to the eventual winners?

What is this nonsense?

I have never rooted for the Yankees, with one exception.....the 2003 World Series. I have never wanted a team to get fricked as badly as I wanted the Marlins to that year

Speaking of which, I've always wondered why Cubs fans were so pissed at Bartman but gave Alex Gonzalez a pass for booting an easy double play that would have ended the inning (IIRC)

It’s easy to blame Steve. Notice he wasn’t the only one who reached for the ball but he gets 100% of the blame

You don't understand sports at all.

team games do not always result in the "best" team, as you measure it, winning.

Take Detroit with Denny McClain.
30 win season. Tired arm.

Mickey f'ing lolich who had won 17 or so in the reg, won 3 games and Detroit won series.
They beat cards with Gibson whose era came at 1.12.
Gibson shut out tigers game 1.
struck out 17.
Game 4, Gibson won again,
allowed 1 run.
Lolich beat Gibson in game 7 as misplayed ball by Lou Brock failed to be 3rd out.

I would have bet you anything Gibson would beat lolich.

You can't count on previous patterns to replicate.

Some fools buy computer programs to tell them when to get on stocks. Hoping pattern patterns again

The former New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner set a mantra, a credo: Anything less than a World Series championship was a failed season.

That was the Steinbrenner doctrine that Steinbrenner, Derek Jeter held to Yankee fans and Yankee players.

Because it’s really fricking hard to win it in baseball and the playoffs can be a crap shoot at times

Was that the year their bullpen melted down multiple times in the playoffs? IIRC they gave up a late lead is almost every game of that ALDS.

the Angels had a deep lineup too, and while their pitching didn’t have as much fan fare, they turned it on when it mattered

They called up Francisco Rodriguez late in the year. He pitched the 8th and Percival the 9th. Both were dominent.

Dude the Yankees only won 4 more games than the Angels.

And the Angels had a Cowboy on their side:

The real question is how the Mariners freaking lost to the Yankees?

That was the year before in 2001, and it was absolutely shocking that they didn't even get to the World Series. Hell they almost lost to the Indians in the ALDS

The 2001 Mariners flamed out, badly.
