Why did Rick Neuheisel leave Colorado for Washington?

I was on the younger side but I remember this was considered a lateral move at the time wasn’t it?

He was slipping at CU and they got hit with violations after he left
UW offered him a big contract and he saw a good chance to get out

Its pretty well documented that Colorado ran him off after he played the guitar and sang to the team.

Larger march madness bracket pool.

They were closer as programs at the time he made the move, but I'd still argue Washington was seen as the better job.
Washington had just fired Jim Lambright, even though he never had a losing record, and they were willing to spend. And for whatever reason, Neuheisel's personality never seemed to click at CU either.

$
Washington offered more and could also offer it over multiple years. Back then state employees in Colorado were not allowed multi year contracts.

Firing Lambright seems to have been a mistake. Neuheisel left the program in shambles

going from mediocre stadium, where buffalo fans threw piss balloons at fans,to this, isn't hard to imagine

I wouldn't go that far. Neuheisel won a Rose Bowl, and had a better case than Miami for playing in the BCS title game since they had actually beaten Miami.
His firing for participating in a March Madness pool was a bad look, but he ended up winning a settlement because the school originally said it was okay and the NCAA botched the investigation.

It’s hard to remember how it felt at the time, but my outsider’s perspective is that Washington is—and was then, though much closer—the overall better program.
A couple of asides this thread reminded me of:
1) Did these 2 split an NC in ‘90 or was that UW and Georgia Tech? I’m pretty sure CU’s split was more recent (with Kordell Stewart), but can’t remember whom they split with. Michigan? Anyway, only 2 splits of my lifetime.
2) Wasnt there some story about Neuheisel taking a team to a water park? Would have been UW or UCLA, I guess.

No it wasn’t. And no he did not.
Lambright should never have been head coach in the first place. Gary Pinkel was the better choice.
And no, Neuheisel did not leave the program in shambles. He may have had UW’s best four year run of recruiting during his tenure.
Winning % as Washington Head Coach:
Neuheisel .673
Lambright .638

Didn't y'all have like five straight losing seasons after Neuheisel left?

90 was GT and Colorado
91 was Miami and UW

That was Colorado in 1990. The Kordell Stewart teams were very good but did not win a national title because they couldn't beat Nebraska.

That’s what happens when you hire and retain shite head coaches. Gilbertson and Willingham were lazy coaches who rather be on the golf course than coach or recruit.

It probably is, but just slightly. Colorado was a real power in the 80s and 90s. As was Washington.
