professional sports. Whenever a fight starts up in Hockey, the refs and players of both teams just sit back, watch, and let them go at it for two or three minutes. Whereas, other sports like football, basketball, and baseball they do their best to break it up before it escalates. I don't really watch Hockey, but this is something I've always been curious about.

That cracks me up everytime when guys jaw at eachother knowing with 100000% certainty, neither of them are going to swing at the other.

Yet in baseball, dog fight ensues.

Because it is hard to kill someone by punching them while you are wearing ice skates.

I like when football players punch each other in the helmet.

a fight generally resolves the chippy, undisciplined play that was occurring.

refs would rather just let them "fight on skates" for 30 seconds, and send them both to the penalty box for 5 minutes, than have to deal with them committing cheap and sneaky penalties on each other for the rest of the game

nobody really gets injured during a fight, but a lot of people get injured from slashing, boarding, interference, high sticks. fighting keeps the injuries down

I'd guess they aren't really worried about hockey players going back to locker room and grabbing their pieces and busting a cap in a fools arse afterwards.

Why is picking up a basketball and shooting it at a hoop encouraged in Basketball, but not in Soccer?

Probably safer to just let 2 guys fight it out instead of trying to break it up and cause a bunch of people to fall on top of each other and having someone possibly get sliced by a skate blade.

Plus its kinda hard to throw a knockout punch while sliding on skates.

If the NHL is smart they will get rid of fighting. People like Bob Probert shouldn't happen in hockey.

Similar to the NFL and touchdown celebrations back in the day. It is just a part of the culture.

This is an overlooked point that is very true.

If you have cleats or sticky basketball shoes on, you can really plant your weight and deliver a dangerous punch.

You can't do that in hockey, its a series of weak jabs with barely any body weight or torque behind it.

Because it’s a part of the tradition of the game. Everyone who plays at that level understands what they are signing up for.
