Who Here Remembers or Knows About Robert Parish Playing Ball at Centenary?
Yeah me neither, the NCAA lost their collective shite over the school converting his and 4 others' standardized test scores to satisfy that stupid "1.6 rule," refused to declare those players eligible for NCAA competition, imposed a 6-year probation on the basketball program, barred them from postseason play and excluded Centenary's results and statistics from weekly statistics and NCAA press guides. We think the NCAA's zealous about enforcing the rules now (LOLZ), they actually were super zealous about enforcing eligibility rules then before NCAA v. Board of Regents of University of Oklahoma, I don't necessarily think this particular punishment (pretty draconian IMO) fit that crime in this case. In a way, it basically destroyed Centenary basketball as far as viability and relevance in college basketball is concerned while the rich continue to get richer. SO LAME.

I remember him beating Bill Laimbeer's arse in the playoffs one year. Hail to the Chief!

I'm not old enough to remember him playing for the Celtics.

He was the nations leading scorer and although I had moved by then, I followed his career in small stories and box scores.

He was part of the worst trade ever. Celtics got him AND the 3rd pick in the first round for first pick in the draft, which turned into Joe Barry Carrol.
SF Warriors got Joe Barry.
Auerback got McHale and the Chief.

I saw McHale take Joe Barry to school in the game between Minnesota and Purdue for the Big Ten championship.
So did red Auerbach.

Joe Barry had a decent career, punctuated by leaving the Warriors at age 26 to go play in Italy one season before continuing in NBA at about the same productivity as when he left.

Saw him play a couple of times when he was in college. A man among boys.

The best part is all the players stuck around even after the players were declared ineligible. Parish made a big deal about Centenary "doing nothing wrong."

Yeah NCAA sucks. We know this.

BTW, speaking of Parish...Nobody had a stranger road to Pro sports stadom than Lyle Alzado.

Following his failure to receive a college scholarship offer, Alzado played for Kilgore College, a junior college in Kilgore, Texas.

After two years, he was asked to leave the team, he later contended, for befriending a black teammate. From Texas, Alzado moved on to Yankton College in South Dakota, a now-defunct school whose campus is currently the site of a federal prison.

Though playing in relative obscurity in the NAIA, Alzado nonetheless gained notice by the NFL when a scout for the Denver Broncos, having been taken off the road by automobile trouble, decided to pass the time by screening a film of Montana Tech, one of Yankton's opponents. Impressed by the unknown player squaring off against Montana Tech's offense, the scout passed back a favorable report to his team.

The Broncos ultimately drafted Alzado in the fourth round of the 1971 draft.

re: Who Here Remembers or Knows About Robert Parish Playing Ball at Centenary?
Dude they are still zealous.

Look at what they did to USC.

An agent not affiliated with the school - seeks out said student - and gives 1 student a house as a downpayment for reprsentation.

USC didn't get those draconian sanctions for boosters paying players like Alabama in the 1990's and beyond.

They got it for having a too much fun and care free atmosphere. And the school didn't vet everyone who hung around players (like that's their fricking job, what a joke) and for having celebs on the sidelines...(again not "protecting athletes from real life.")

NCAA's decision on USC was basically telling everyone that (well, they weren't, it was just targeted malfeasance against USC) - that you have to shelter your student athletes like prisoners and everything the family does 200 miles away from campus...is your responsibility.

NCAA has always been about vendettas...and certain schools have them in their pockets and certain schools don't.

And we all know what is what.

Saw him when the Gents came to Ewing Coliseum ranked #18 in the country to face off against Calvin Natt at NLU. Place was packed to the rafters (7000 plus)... Calvin canned a 15 footer with five seconds left to win it for the Indians.

Fun facts:

Robert went to Woodlawn High in Shreveport. Same HS as Terry Bradshaw, Joe Ferguson, James Gilyard and Robert Pennywell.

I went to HS with Robert’s sister Liz. She was 6’2”, looked just like him but didn’t play basketball. I never asked her why.

Saw him play in the Top Twenty in Alexandria when I was about 8 years old. He seemed to be a foot taller than everyone else on the court.
