Where does this year’s Dayton team rank among the saddest disappointments in CBB history?

Note that teams like UNC and Louisville were unquestionably bigger disappointments this season looking at this season purely in a vacuum, but when you take everything into context, it’s hard to think of a sadder disappointment in recent memory than this year’s Dayton team.
Most people agree that Dayton was the program most screwed over by the 2020 tournament cancellation. They were 29-2 and led by NPOY Obi Toppin, in line for a 1 seed and seemingly poised for a Final Four run if not a national championship. Such a run could've changed their program forever, and that team is the lifeblood of the city, so it could've changed the university and city forever as well.
There was a bright spot, however. They were able to sign their best recruiting class ever thanks to the publicity from that regular season, although one not nearly as good as what they would've had had the tournament been played. Nevertheless, they beat eventual national champion Kansas in the ESPN Events Invitational, but fell just short of the NCAA tournament thanks to some early-season Q4 losses that came before the team really started to gel. As a result, they were ranked by both major polls in the preseason and predicted to run away with the Atlantic 10 while cruising to an upper seed, with several even pegging them as a Final Four contender and DaRon Holmes as a NPOY contender. Most importantly, they were supposed to avenge the 2020 team.
Instead, they failed to win the A-10, likely a 1-bid conference. Did the pressure of living up to 2020 get to them? Was the hype just wishful thinking that came as a result of people hoping they could make up for 2020? The fact that they didn’t live up to preseason expectations is bad enough, but I think the 2020 aspect makes them one of the saddest disappointments in college basketball if not sports history.

Y’all are literally the defending champions. Dayton should literally sue China for lost revenue at this point.

if this year's Dayton team didn't underachieve more than any other college basketball team ever.
It's hard to think of a team in history that's disappointed more than this year's Dayton team
How much more melodramatic bullshite about Dayton are you planning to post, exactly?

Literally, you're correct. Literally. Not theoretically. But literally

Xavier fricks Dayton's wife every afternoon while Dayton eats from the vending machine at work.

We did too. FSU was 26-5 and ranked #4 going into the ACC Tourney. Now we’re back at the bottom of the ACC.

Y’all are up there too. Your best season ever cancelled and there’s not a sliver of that magic left anymore. At least you’re in a major conference though.

Dude, it’s Dayton. 2020 was Holtmann’s best team as well. Lots of teams and seniors got screwed. FJB

was it? his first year was probably the best team to me. all the other years have been identically average until this year.
just looking back, how tf did that '21 team get a 2 seed?

UNC is the first pre-season #1 ranked team to ever not make the tourney. I'd say that's more disappointing than some Dayton team that was never gonna win anyway.

UNC is definitely a bigger disappointment but not a sadder disappointment. I'm pretty sure more people feel bad for the program whose dream season was ripped away from them than the blue blood who was in the title game last year and won a title 6 years ago.

It's not like Loyola became a powerhouse after their 2018 Final Four run. It sucks for Dayton that their best team ever didn't get a chance to prove it, but it seems highly unlikely that crushed their aspirations as a program. Dayton is a small private school like Loyola so that comparison fits, IMO.
Florida State was the best team in the country that year. They are the team I believe would have cut down the nets had that tournament played out.

Loyola was a true Cinderella though. Nobody paid them any attention going into the tournament. Dayton was a hyped team from the moment they took Kansas to OT in Maui.
Great point about FSU. That was their best team ever as well and they've completely fallen flat on their face since then.

Quite possibly teh best team UGA basketball has ever put on the court (and I'm fully aware the list aint that long to choose from) was held out of posteason play by our own dumbfrick administration. This was during the Jim Harrick "scandal" which consisted of 1) his son and assistant coach teachign an easy PE class which any student was free to take, and 2) paying some phone bills for a few hundred bucks of a player. Child's play compared to what goes on elsewhere.
Our admin was so terrified of the NCAA that in order to try to make ourselves look better we intentionally self-banned that posteason. Ordinarily that'd be a joke since we hardly ever make the posteason anyway, but of course this ONE time, that was mayeb the best team we've ever had. That team was ranked in 13 polls that year, actually ranked! They beat #2 ranked Pitt just before New Years then beat a top 20 LSu to start SEC play. To finish up SEC play they beat #3 ranked UF. They were banned from the SECT so ended the regular season at 19-8 (11-5). As a point of comparison for other SEC schools, bama made the tourney that year as a 10 seed with 17 wins and a losing SEC record. MSu was a #5 seed with 20 overall wins and 10 in conference. UF was a #2 seed with 24 overall wins and 12 SEC. If we didn't have any punishments it's likely we would've had at least 20 overall wins and 12 SEC wins which would have put us around a ~4ish seed in the tourney. Which for a program as lousy as UGA basketball has been all-time would have been indescribably good.
