It looks like the big 12’s collapse is imminent. At least as a power 5 conference.

I’d have to think the single biggest mistake is ceding too much power to Texas and letting them have their own network. Suffocating a shot for a big 12 network. But as we know collapses or downfalls like this usually aren’t just one thing.

What were other missteps the conference made that allowed this to happen?

Longhorn network and stopping at WVU. They should have grabbed Cincy and Louisville to get back to 12 and create more interest in the eastern part of the country.

Bottom line is they have 2 brands out of 10 teams.

ESPN took over the SEC.

ESPN controls CFB.

Big12 is not a member of the SEC.

ESPN made a monopoly, diminished the spread offense as a gimmick...belittled the Big12 to give Bama a rematch with LSU instead of Okie State. Writing on the wall in money dictating.

And then praised the spread when the SEC adopted it.

If they hadn’t allowed LHN, it just would have collapsed a decade ago instead of now

By not having equal revenue sharing

By not making everyone equal and treating Texas better than everyone else.

SEC treats all teams the same revenue wise. Vandy makes the same as Alabama. Yeah technically bama gets screwed a little, but now people aren’t looking to bolt, keeping the conference strong and lifting everyone’s floor.

How does the Big 12 revenue sharing work?

Texas and OU get the lion’s share and others get scraps IIRC.

It is simple. They didn't treat everyone as equals. Don't over complicate it.

This has very little to do with it. The big12 died because it lost NU, CU, A&M and Mizzou. Why did they leave? because certain schools demanded and received special treatment.

Would Mizzou, NU and A&M all have stayed if everyone was treated equal? yes. Mizzou would have definitely taken less money to stay in a stable Big12 and keep all the rivalries. We had benefited from the unequal revenue sharing the last 5-8 years of the Big12 but we thought it was time the conference focused on helping everyone equally.

Other schools did not.

I think Texas and ku get the most preferential treatment.

Why is its Texas' fault? Seems like the Kansas, ISU, etc types should have fully invested in their football programs.

They were so good, football wise, in the late '90s and early 2000s.

Nebraska
Kansas State
Colorado
Texas
Oklahoma

Pretty much. In typical Texas fashion, they thought they were the most valuable program in the Big 12 and that the other schools would just be okay with it.. That's part of why A&M, Missouri Colorado and Nebraska left right?

Those programs leaving, especially Missouri, shrunk their value (because of the KC media market).

That left the Big 12 with only a few big games people looked forward to every year.
Oklahoma vs Texas
Oklahoma vs Oklahoma St

and maybe two or three others.. But imagine the Red River shootout as a SEC rival? The result of that game could have more impact on other teams so the ratings will likely go up from that one..

Anyway, this is about where the Big 12 went wrong. You pretty much summed it up.
