not to put the palm of your dominant hand on the ball?
Most of the pros don’t follow that. Guess it wasn’t great teaching
ETA sorry if I started this thread before.

I learned how to shoot a free throw from this YouTube video. The instructor didn’t waste time talking about palms or dominant hands or any other nonsense. You can’t take advice from any John Doe.

If you went to LSU basketball camp, you know.

Outtake video! It takes a big man to put his failures on display.

Then why are they pros and you're not?

Any idea how to get a 6 year old boy to stop trying to shoot from the fricking parking lot and get him to start shooting properly and from close range?
He can shoot with the ball in front of him but the kid just loves to launch them from drop. Oh well, hopefully he will grow out of it.

Run that little punk off ten screens and tell him to pop it from 16 feet like a prime Rip Hamilton

Both my kids were not good at basketball when they started so they perfected bank shots and layups to where both are about 90% shooters in the paint.
My youngest developed a hook shot that’s pretty impressive but he’s never taken a single shot from more than 10 feet outside of free throws. My oldest has developed into a bit more of an outside shooter but he’s much more prone to take it in than most of his teammates.
I beat them into submission the difference of high % shot vs flashy and that taking a shot you make 90% of the time for 2 points makes more points than 50% of a shot for 3 points.
Oldest will take a few 3s now but he knows his limits.

I was too short and clumsy to make my HS basketball team but I practiced Free Throws like crazy. I went to an Elks Hoop shoot and sunk 19/25 FT’s. The winner in my age group hit 24/25 FT and moved on to State competition.

Yes, you let the ball rest on your finger tips, never let it sit in your palm. Reason being your finger tips have way more nerves than palms. Same thing with gripping a golf club. It always in the fingers cause you get more feel.

They taught us to not use it to shoot (i.e., go forward with it as you do your shooting hand) but was never taught to not use it at all. You do put your palm to help support it in place while you aim and shoot with your dominant hand. Also keep your elbow in and flick the wrist.
Do they still do Little Dribblers around here?
