When do talented people actually catch on to this farce that is college coaching?
Posted by YoungManOldMan on 1/17/18 at 3:27 pm427
When does the market for many of these positions start to change from "former jock" to "analyst" and "statistician"?
I am hard pressed to believe your garden variety market analyst and statistician couldn't draw up a game plan for college basketball or football and meet or be greater than the mean.
The fundamentals have been taught by college. You can hire specialist support staff but from a pure X's and O's standpoint of breaking down game film and installing a working offense, I don't see what your standard Fortune 500 business junior executive couldn't do for the most part.
Maybe I'm overlooking something intangible that but it strikes me as less teaching, more game planning as the real hallmark of successful coaches.

You can completely suck at your job as head coach and get 1.5M a year. Look at Trent Johnson or Johnny Jones.
I mean, there are tons of examples in college.

You are forgetting alot, most importantly how to be a CEO of a 100 million dollar organization and managing 100+ players and employees.
Not to mention having the ability to convince 18 year olds to want to play for you.
I doubt many statisticians have those capabilities.

Yet, Message board posters firmly believe they know what’s good for a football program inside and out.

Both got paid from colleges for mediocre results and continue to get paid and hired. I'm just saying, seems like a goldmine to me for anybody with leadership and analytical skills.

The CEO part is less challenging than the player management part. The personnel part could be difficult but you've got support staff.

Not sure what you're getting at, but I have always felt like 90% of the college hoops coaches come across as bright guys who would have excelled in business, law, etc. On the flip side, 90% of college football coaches seem like gym teachers.
As far as analysts/assistants, isn't the playing field just pretty much equal with how many you can have on staff?
I don't think tactics even really matter that much when the same handful of teams at the top of college football stockpile stupid talent and win everything. In hoops, I suppose it's somewhat easier to gain an edge with scheme and mid-tier upperclassmen who might be able to take down McD's AA freshmen.
FInally, you're only looking at the money at the top and ignoring the fact that coaching is an old boys' network that requires you to work for peanuts for a long time on your way up. I'm not sure many geniuses are willing to do that.

"Run and stay with him. Bat ball down. Turn hips."

Why would you turn your hips after you've batted the ball down?

Because if you followed my directions, you're probably turning for the bench.

Baseball has gone this way. Hiring numbers people, who are changing the game.
I believe 2 Teams in past 5 years have hired young, Analytic GM's. This is pushing the old school coaches out, and football is beginning to take a look, Cleveland started to try it, then stopped, before they actually got a jist of whether it would work or not.
It's coming to all the sports, and the retreads will be in trouble. The family tree of mediocre coaches will be a thing of the past.
And at least 1 of the baseball analytic GM's has put together one hell of a farm system and young team(Milwaukee). Others will follow.

Superior interpersonal skills are crucial in succeeding at coaching college team sports.
If you can't get your players to follow, it doesn't matter how smart you are.
I could never be a recruiter. Sucking up to a bunch of 18 year old divas, no thank you.

I think when a guy like Austin Thomas is making a 200k plus and then he leaves and LSU decides it doesn't even need the position anymore...that says all I need to know.

Now tell me how to stop Julio Jones with that defensive strategy whenever you have no elite corners

Baseball is a much easier sport to model, though, especially for individual players.
Football analytics are definitely useful in their current form, and every pro and college team worth their salt uses them, but I think there will have to be some computing innovations to take it anywhere near a level that you currently can in baseball.
