It’s actually closer to a highly recruited athlete leaving school early enter the draft than a lower rated athlete actually being drafted.
In other words, a guy who everyone expected to succeed taking a small risk and succeeding vs a guy people where on the fence about or had low expectations for taking advantage of an opportunity and exceeding everyone expectations.
