For arguments sake, lets say the G5 has a historic year (which is off to a pretty good start) and has a few teams finish undefeated, yet they still don't make the CFP. At what point would there need to be major change amongst the college football structure and the G5? Do some of the G5 conferences merge to form a bigger national brand? Do they merge with the FCS? At some point, something has to change with the current G5 and the "no championship" purgatory they find themselves in. What do you think should ultimately happen? This remaining issue will force the last shake up of college football alignment IMO.

I think consistent G5 performance could yield a playoff spot but it’s a tough target to hit.

Must be undefeated and must do it for consecutive years to build credibility. Must also schedule P5 teams in non-conference. I’m thinking like a UCF scenario

I think eventually there will be a G5 playoff and they will have their own champion.

The G5 teams have about the same chance as my school to win the title
So i really don’t care much about what happens to them

G5 teams bleed money. They take buy games just to stay afloat in many cases. The difference between the average G5 and FCS is not as great as you think. The difference is largely the number of scholarships which creates more depth.

IMO, you have the FCS and G5 merge. Let the non scholarship schools in FCS do whatever they want.

I hope this happens. Still make them eligible for the Playoff should a G5 team get picked by the committee (they never will) and do their own thing. I think it could work well. Of course, FCS has a playoff and that is played in obscurity. Might be the same for a G5 playoff.

What exactly is the motivation for the G5 to literally take a step backwards and merge with the FCS? It makes zero financial sense. It makes zero sense from a brand recognition standpoint.

Your argument for merging them has no basis outside of you wanting to eliminate all FBS programs that aren’t in a power five conference.

Exactly. G5 programs are waiting for an expanded playoff with 8-16 teams (It is coming eventually. Look at the basketball tournament for evidence. More teams mean more money)

When that day comes the G5 with have one automatic bid if not more (in the 16 team version). Now all of a sudden the G5 teams have a chance. Obviously a small one, but a chance to earn that auto bid and compete in the CFP

What is the motivation to stay as is when very few can afford to sustain the model long term. NIU took a buy game to get their brains kicked in by FSU for the sole purpose of saving jobs. NIU is one of the more successful G5 teams as well.

The P5 will never give them a seat at the table. Time to start looking out for themselves before it’s too late.

Wtf are you talking about? G5 programs run tight budgets but outside of maybe a handful they aren’t on the verge of collapsing. I mean shite, Louisiana Tech has an awful budget even for G5 and just spent nearly $50 million in football facility upgrades. You really think they would have spent that if the entire program was on the verge of going bankrupt?

Too late? Until what happens?

Are you looking at G5 like they are high school football programs?

I think this is right, and it would have to likely be the Power 5 group that splits away and plays football outside of the NCAA sanction rather than the Group 5 of shrinking away. G5 would never do that, like you said, so I think it would make sense for the P5 schools to split off. I think the G5 would be smart to adopt an NCAA recognized playoff to try and maximize revenue.

I’d rather the G5 split away for a G5 championship than an FCS one
But I think at this rate with TV the playoff will increase and eventually one will get in

I think that's the right play.

What does the G in G5 stand for?

The Good 5?

I think an even better question is, “Why are certain teams even in the Power 5, continuing to get abused year in and year out?”

Vanderbilt
Duke
Northwestern (managed to win their division in ‘18)
Wake Forest
Rutgers
Baylor (had a good run under Briles)

These teams could have a ton of success in the G5 or FCS, but instead get pounded every year (for the most part) by P5 teams.
