No. He didn't come out (or was outted) until just before the draft.
He was definitley drafted under pressure from the NFL to be PC.

Missouri had a very good defensive line back in those days. I remember before the SECCG the AU coaches saying watching tape of them gave them nightmares, and we had recently played Bama, UGA and LSU. They had four very athletic bodies up front and Sam benefitted from the other guys drawing all the heat.
But as others mentioned, he was always projected as a late draft pick and a reach because he was a "tweener" - too slow to play Edge/OLB, too weak to play End.

Quarterbacks and running backs and offensive linemen did not discriminate.
They were able to block him, run by him, a d throw the ball over him. Being gay did not help or hinder his performance. Sam just was not good enough.
Lots of all SEC players never amount to much in NFL.
