last week i saw a post with a strange giant flag stretched out for the national anthem ceremony

it was a big single red strip over a big single white strip over a big single blue strip with only 27 stars

what was this flag and the story behind it? it sure wasnt an american flag

does anyone have the story behind that strange event?

REEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers' use of a patriotic banner instead of an American flag during the national anthem Sunday had social media all atwitter. Packers director of Public Affairs Aaron Popkey said the Packers used banners before when other pregame activities take up part of the field. On Sunday, the University of Wisconsin Marching Band, which played the national anthem, occupied half the field.

quote:

“The banner used during Sunday’s pregame ceremony supplemented the three U.S. flags on the roof of the stadium and the flag carried by the color guard on the field," Popkey said. "We've used such displays from time to time in the past when other pregame elements take up a significant portion of the field. To avoid causing confusion, we will not be using such displays in the future.”

thanks, and this isnt directed at you, but the situation in general

that still explains absolutely nothing about what the flag is, what it represents, why it was displayed at all, and what is the significance of it only having 27 stars

sounds like a whole lot of "oh shite" CYA time by the NFL

i could be wrong but only representing half of the states seems like something you would see on a civil war type flag

For someone that doesn't watch NFL football, you sure do pay close attention to NFL football.

This paragraph sums it up pretty good actually

quote:

The banner used during Sunday’s pregame ceremony supplemented the three U.S. flags on the roof of the stadium and the flag carried by the color guard on the field," Popkey said. "We've used such displays from time to time in the past when other pregame elements take up a significant portion of the field. It was a banner, not a flag. Similar to what Master of Sinanju posted.

Eta: The correct term is a bunting

Why wouldn't they just get a US flag the same size as that banner?

Because celebrating America and American values is frowned upon in America in 2018

Because carrying the US flag like that, flat or horizontally, is against the flag code.

Fair enough, but what do the 27 stars on that banner represent?
