Was a topic of discussion for me and some buddies recently. It centered around football, with the ‘72 Dolphins being the best example. I also think the ‘85 Bears achieve this status. It made me think of other teams.

Football:
72 Dolphins
85 Bears
68 Jets
The 00 Ravens were also tossed out because of their defense, and 07 Pats for 18-1.

Baseball:
27 Yankees
69 Mets
86 Mets
Honorable mention: 04 Red Sox

Basketball:
96 Bulls

I think each team’s portrayal in the media is responsible for the strong associations. I think dynasty teams win so often they aren’t tied to one specific year, which is a major issue in basketball.

I think there are some candidates in college sports too. Basketball: 85 Nova, 88 Kansas, 1990 UNLV. Football: 1980 Georgia 01 Miami, 04 USC, maybe even 05 Texas. Soon to be 19 LSU.

Curious if the MSB has any candidates or cares to refute.

95 Nebraska

Also 91 Duke. I know they have had great teams so it might not be the best example, but the ‘91 team is always the first that comes to my mind when I think of Duke Basketball. Laettner, Hurley, Hill. The Kentucky game.

I never forget the 1984 BYU Football team. So bizarre to see a non traditional power win a national title.

True but before 95 happened it was easily 1971 Nebraska as they were often voted the greatest team of all-time.

And 1971 is still considered the benchmark.

1971 Nebraska is the only team in college football history to defeat the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 teams in the final poll of a season.

It also won one of the Games of the Century against #2 Oklahoma.

91 Braves. 95 was the World Series win but that 91 season was as magical as Christmas for 8 year old me
