What did you older ones think of Brady when he was in college?

He was like Matt Flynn without the natty. Had some nice starts at a big-time program but if you didn't follow the sport then you'd have never heard of him.

We never got to see his full potential because Lloyd Carr was under pressure to play the 5 star, Drew Henson.

You mean beat Alabama in the Orange Bowl.

All he ever did was win anywhere he's ever played.

He also beat Arkansas in the Citrus Bowl in '99.

It's well documented how much Carr screwed the pooch with the Drew Henson fiasco.

He was a good but not spectacular QB at Michigan. Battled Drew Henson (number one type recruit with a big arm) for playing time and came out ahead his senior year. Michigan had a lot of good QB's in that era, so he probably projected as being an Elvis Grbac, Brian Griese-type of NFL player at best (he wasn't considered the prospect they were).

You can watch some Michigan highlights on Youtube...he could make some throws in college, but again, every QB at Michigan in the 1980's through the 2000's was considered a legitimate NFL prospect.

I was in middle school going into HS when he was doing well at Michigan.

He was a good QB at a big time program. I remember he balled out against Penn State and Alabama his senior season and led Michigan to a top 5 ranking. The CFB world had more parity, so there wasn’t a stigma against him because of Michigan or the Big Ten.

That said, Henson was hyped up for Michigan. That stretch with Griese, Brady, Henson, Navarre, etc was consistent. No reason to think Brady would become what he is now.

Brady was a middle tier college QB nobody thought much of. That's why he was drafted so low and why he had a whole career path planned if he went undrafted.

This is a good description.

You thought of him as your typical Michigan QB will be in NFL as backup. He was Grbac cloned. Michigan QB for Moeller and Carr had a certain look

Henson was so more hyped than Brady as was Henne

My pops always claims he and I knew Brady was awesome. Maybe he did, but I'm not going to lie, I got sucked in by the super recruit Henson. I was at a wedding this day, so I'm not 100% sure of this, but I think in Saban's last season MSU got way out in front of Michigan against Henson and Brady almost brought Michigan back.

Was Saban at LSU in 99? I thought he came in 98, that MSU was in East Lansing right? MSU has the odd years I thought.

It was 1999. State went 9-2. They had a couple of losses to Purdue and Wisconsin, but otherwise a great season. Plax was a beast.

I think so. I confuse 99 and 01 a lot. I was at Sparty Stadium with a bunch of State juggalo friends for that game where Smoker hit TJ on the last play to win it.
