Forgive my ignorance but is this a common phrase? I've never heard it before. I hate the PC stuff as much as anybody but that seems odd

Yes, its completely harmless. I think people just need to learn how its used and who uses it and in what context.
I bet the internet PC bullies wipe it from existence and force people to eradicate it from their vocabulary. They seem to always win.

If I was his boss, I'd probably fire him but less about the PC part and more for failure to meet job standards
Letting a phrase like that slip into the broadcast is a failure to do your job and puts in doubt your reliability in the future
Any good announcer practices and refines their craft where something like this is unacceptable
