Pedro Gomez of ESPN reported overnight that the Los Angeles Angels expect Ohtani to undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the remainder of the 2018 season and the entire 2019 season. Here was Gomez’s comment on SportsCenter:

“Everything I’m hearing is that the reality is, he probably will need Tommy John surgery . . . The earliest we might see him, should he have TJ surgery, would be the 2020 season.”

Can he not return as a DH next year?

That sucks.

Wasn't there some concern about his elbow in the pre-season?

It’s a 15 month rehab.

Why couldn't he DH next year?

Return is normally 18 months, Angels are hoping he can go the Tanaka route so they're going to reevaluate him in another 3 weeks before deciding. Tanaka had a Grade 1 UCL strain, while Ohtani has a grade 2.

I hate sports injuries. I wish we could just have seasons where everyone is healthy and everything plays out with teams at their best.

Tommy John is the worst. I know it has come a long way, but the rehab time is just so damn long.

Recovery can be as short as 11 months, but you're not going to rush back a player of Ohtani's caliber.

Because he wouldn't be healed, could he near the end of the season? Possibly but look at Matt Weiters who had it happen, he missed an entire season. Plus some of spring training the following year I believe.

That sucks he was good for baseball. Also gotta think that trout will test the waters when his contract is up. From what I’ve read he says he just wants to win and without ohtani gotta think the situation is pretty bleak

Weiters had surgery June 16th and returned June 5th. Saying we won't see Ohtani until 2020 seems worst case scenario.

ETA - I understand 2020 is not your prognosis.

Trout is set to be a Free Agent after the 2020 season, the year Ohtani will return. Ohtani is still young (23/24) so he still has some good years plus a team friendly deal

Yeah they aren’t going to ride his arm the first year back from Tommy John. It might not be AS palpable since he was pitching every 7th day anyways but still

I don't honestly know what sort of strain batting puts on a UCL, but there's no way they risk Ohtani's elbow letting him DH before he's 100% ready.

Especially if the Angels aren't in contention.

Everyone is reporting he’ll be back in 2020 at the earliest.

Wow.

warning

He knew something was wrong with his elbow, got some minor treatment in Japan and rehab on the downlow to heal it enough. Signs with a MLB team before he blows out his elbow(instead of waiting for his big payday in 2 years) and takes it easy in ST to avoid raising concerns about him knowing. Lets it fly in majors and boom, done.

His contract is still so minuscule compared to what he could have gotten if he signed as a 25 year old, and his hype and performance were so exceptional, I still think he would have gotten more money through 2021 if he waited in Japan and didn’t play for a season and a half.
